i know that 'ma' refers to the stance. i often hear my sifu(jow ga style) referring to the stances as horse. @ first i was under the impression that the only horse was the sei ping ma (or square horse). but then there's the other stances which i will name. aren't they all referring to a different type of horse? or am i wrong. i'm jus curious as to a good translation as to what type of horse i might be using. here is a list of the basic stances we have listed on a poster in my school(the list is over 30 years old.):
sei ping ma- square horse stance
gee'm ma- bow & arrow stance
diu ma(or ding ji ma)- cat stance
kei lun ma- cross-legged stance
gum gai doke lap ma- golden chicken stance

now of course i know that the translations are pretty loose, but maybe someone can help me w/ more literal translations. like i've heard of twisted horse, kneeling horse, hanging horse.... maybe someone will understand what i'm talkin about. dor jie si hings/ si jie!(i think i said that right :o)

si dai

Ding ji ma is the stance similar to the bow & arrow - we refer to it as triangle horse. It is transitional.

Diu ma is the cat stance.

Duk lup ma, we say crane stance.
