Am I correct that while on the dirt
to keep the arms close
to the body's sweet girth?
And when doing a sprawl
is it true and proper
to throw my legs back
with all the speed they can offer?

the answer to number one is no if you want armbarred. And the second i like to sprawl my hips not straight back but at an angle cutting off the shoot a little more. If he wraps my closest leg i try and cross face him away so he can't turn into my hips to drive

 What was the question?

Those are probably good habits to get into. :)
Don't stick your arms out when grappling (sometimes you can get away with it when you're pounding someone from mount, but even then you have to be wary of giving a post, etc.)

And the sprawl should be not only explosive and fast, but should put as much pressure on the shooter as possible, ideally flattening him out on his stomach.

Yes on both accounts. There are situations where extending your arms is fine. It depends. But keeping your arms in when you are in an inferior position is sound strategy.

Rhyming while grappling, however, will get your teeth kicked in.

Leave your arms out
if you want a broken bone

But dont grapple an opponent
If he has an ice cream cone. (sorry Ryu thats still funny to me;) )
