Actually, I believe the biggest rule is "wear shoes."

Silly rule, but at my first tournament a few JMA players came to compete, took off their shoes before entering the ring and nearly started a riot among the judges.

Tournament entry forms should have the rules of competition (incluidng forms & sparring) printed somewhere on them.

Or, are you looking for specifics (like bowing in&out, what to wear, etc.)?

Are they like point-karate/tkd tournaments?

full-contact,semi-contact,allow face contact,allow any form of grappling?

I'm just curious to see whats allowed & whats not.

There's no such governing body that represents a competitive format known as "kungfu tournaments."

"Kungfu" simply refers to any martial system from China. The practices thereof can vary as much from one another as they do from non-kungfu martial systems.

The (few) tournaments i've been to held a couple of different types of sparring, plus matches for internal artists (push hands, etc.) and wing chun.

Light contact, point sparring; the competitors wear padding, no joint locks, grabs or grappling, and no face contact.

There's also san shou, which is full-contact and includes grabbing and throwing, and chinese wrestling (not sure of the exact name) which looks similar to judo, with the contestants trying to uproot & throw each other.

Number of events depends on the tournament organizer, who also sets the rules (though usually within general guidelines).

Every tournament I've been to differs.
Politics makes it difficult for them to agree on anything these days! :rolleyes:

Generally in no-contact/light-contact bouts:
- no head contact
- controlled body contact
- light contact to legs
- no elbows/knees
- no grappling

Full contact bouts are different, often:
- no biting
- no eye gouging
- no head butting
- etc.

Check with the promoter.

It really depends on wich organization and a whole bunch of things. Its not completly standarlized.

The full contact ones are Sanshou and Kuoshu fights.
There is also forms competition and pushing hands competition.

The diference between Sanshou and Kuoshu is very little in my humble opinion.
