Ok. Last night I got my purple belt in BJJ.

This is the part where you all tell me congratulations and stuff!

Seriously, I'm just a little excited about it... the blue belt doldrums are where a lot of people stagnate. Very few purples compared to the number of blues floating around.

One more tiny little step on the road to Black...

Congratulations Merryprankster!!! Keep it up, and you will have your black belt in no time. And maybe soon, you too will be able to kick the holy h3ll out of Ralek!

Yeah, well last night I lost a standing 8 count after recieving an elbow to the noggin in a technique line.

So there.

Well, come to think of it, yours is a little more cool.

Congratulations, jack@ss. Most of the instructors that teach BJJ around here don't have their purple yet.

Merry, I'll be the first to congratulate!
That's a hard earned belt and not many do it. Congrats man!!

I'm jealous. :(

Seriously congrats. I could always tell you were an awesome grappler, and actually considered you a "sempai" to my grappling skill. ;)

Is it true that you have to choke out a dog to get your purple belt? I heard you have to kill a man to get your black belt.

Thanks guys,

LOL at Tigerstyle!

No dogs to choke... I did have to run the line though. 30 or so minutes with a new guy every 2 minutes... you start with the newest white belt so by the time Lloyd gets you, you're burned out....

not that it matters :)

After Purple are brown and black.

There are only 5 belts in BJJ--white, blue, purple, brown, black. I don't know if they call them "dans." We tend not to use the Japanese terminology.

Ryu--oddly enough I'm MUCH better at BJJ than I ever was at wrestling. My takedowns were never very good, and once they figure that out in college, they take you down for two and let you back up for one. Even if your counterwrestling is good (mine is) they are bound to get you once in awhile. It doesn't take long to lose that way

JWTAYLOR
04-03-2002, 12:11 PM
Technique line,

lots of people line up single file, the person in the front turns around. From there, a couple of versions;

The guy turned around in the front must defend against a specific attack from the person in front of him with a specific response

The guy turned around in front must defend against any attack fro the person in front of him with any response

The guy turned aroudn in front must defend against a specific attack with any response.

When the attack and self defense technique have been completed, the person in fron moves to the back, and the next guy comes up. Try to move through the line as fast as humanly possible.

Merryprankster

Kris,

The goal is different, so the moves are different.

In wrestling, you're trying to get your opponent to his back. In BJJ, you're trying to submit your opponent. An example might be that in BJJ, you almost never turn your back to your opponent, but in wrestling, you go belly down to avoid getting turned over all the time.

The way of moving however, is very similar. The point systems are also different--in wrestling, a takedown is a high scoring move. In BJJ, it's one of the lowest scoring moves.

I have found that even my mediocre takedown skills suffice to handle most BJJers.

The irony is that I am something of a guard player (position in which you are on your back and controlling your opponent with your legs and hands). I love sweeps.

Merry, congrats congrats!!!!

I'm not sure how many people on this board understand exactly what a purple signifies, but da.mn bro, that's excellant. I'm going to start a thread this afternoon for you on the guard game, looking for pointers. Bro, I thought you were about a 1 year white all this time, don't know why.

If I had known you were a Stone Blue when you hit the boards, I'd be annoying the $hit out of you from the get. Oh well, I guess I'll have to make up for lost time, LOL.

I am a purple (GRIN) under Lloyd Irvin--

and as for the sandbagging blues, I'm fully aware of them. I lost by ADVANTAGE (0-0) score to the guy who took the whole shebang at the Pan-Am's this year. Darn single elimination tournaments!

I don't want to get into the reffing, so don't start me :)

Out of interest, Ralek mentioned learning BJJ from a CD-Rom (on a post which I think has been deleted?), I was wondering if anyone knew which one, although I am not interested in changing style I am interested to see what all the fuss is about.

Thank you for any help,

best regards,

Do you actually get a new belt, or do you just re-dye the other one?

Is there a certain shade of purple?

Arent there red-stripes that go on black belts to differenciate between blacks belts?

Merryprankster
04-03-2002, 02:55 PM
Nope, it's a stiff new belt, complete with bright purple (I mean, I really think it's PURPLE) that announce to all the other purples at tournaments:

"FRESH MEAT!"

As opposed to my old blue belt which looks kind of gray with some white spots on it.

I have no idea about the black belt stripes thing. To be honest, I've never looked that closely, or been that interested :)

I have the Gracie BJJ book, they both wear black belts in all the pictures, and each has a different number of red stripes.

Merryprankster
04-03-2002, 03:03 PM
Oh.

Some use stripes on belts, some don't I think.

I know the Gracie's typically do. I think....

Better fade the purple belt fast so that you won't be picked on so often.

"Someone mentioned the gracies use blackbelts with stripes, i would assume they do degrees, like The Father prolly has a larger rank then ralek ?. Anyone know. "

Actually i think Helio Gracie (the living founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu) wears a red belt as a sign of protest against measuring people by the number of stripes on their belt. Pretty sure i read that somewhere.

I don't do any style of Kung Fu. I came here to see if somebody could recommend a KF school in DC reachable by Metro for a friend of mine. I liked the atmosphere and I stayed.

My first fight is this weekend. I have no idea what to expect.

I currently box (not well).
I have wrestled in the past.
And... I do BJJ.

So, as you can see, my fight strategy is to ensure my opponent and I get to the canvas ASAP.

In the gracie book, it says that black belts that achieve great fame 'or skill' begin wearing red belts. It also says that the gracie school uses red stripes to distinguish between black belts.

Had to get home to refrence the book. But of course, thats just speaking about the gracie school of BJJ.

Is it possible to be happy for somebody without "teaching them," that single moments are transitory experiences?
