In the description for Jiang Jian-ye's video series for "Traditional Chen Tai Chi Short Staff", it states that the form was created by Master Chen Shen-Pu. Does anybody know who Chen Shen-Pu was, or what his lineage is ? I haven't seen his name in any of the Chen family lineages, but perhaps it is spelled differently...?

I know that there is a "traditional short staff form" in Chen taiji. I believe it is called "wu hu qun yang gun". It is taught by Master Chen Qingzhou, among others (see http://marina.fortunecity.com/victory/273/acqz.htm ). But you're saying the version on Jiang's tape is not the same - is that correct ? I thought it was (but I don't have the tape, nor have I watched it).

Herb Rich's site, under weapons, is a pretty good place to start. The four traditional weapons are the sword (jian), sabre (dao), spear (qiang), and staff (gun).

My understanding is that many of the weapon forms were created in the 20th century.

I checked the Chen Style Taijiquan book by Davidine Siaw-Voon Sim and David Gaffney, the weapons section and there is no mention of a short staff.

I also don't recall Chen QingZhou having a short staff. We visited him in 2000 and his students put on a demonstration. The jian, spear and dao were demonstrated along with the taiji ball. However, I think they may do the taiji ruler, mmmmmm maybe or was it Ma Hong's group?????

Maybe Ma Hong's line uses this weapon.
