I wanted to share one of my favorite links on the subject of classic drive-in movie theaters, man I love drive-ins, love the feel, the smell, the sounds, cuddling in the front seat with my girl, I wish I was there in the 40's and 50's to watch the silver classics of sci-fi and horror.

What I would give to see "Them" on the big screen.

I thought all the ones in our neck of the woods closed or went under or something like that.

Are there any left around Chicago?

Bro...Bro...Bro!!!!!

Cascade Drive-In on Ogden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been there since the 40's I believe, one of the few left in our neck of the woods, if not the state. You have never been there!

They just had a thing about it on Wild Chicago, I have been going there on and off since I started dating my girlfriend back in 93, its right across from that cool farm where they have the great Halloween pumkins.

Bro...Bro...Bro!!!!!! :D

Drive-ins are sweetly cool. I remember one of the first movies I ever saw was at a drive-in. It was a great way for families to go to the movies, bring their own snacks and drinks and watch a movie together. Anybody remember those mosquito repellent coils you used to light up to chase away the bugs at night? We'd bring those too so we wouldn't be eaten alive. Here are some of the movies I saw at drive-ins as a lad:

Ben-Hur, Born Free, some flick with Ben Gazarra. There was a porn drive-in in Tyler, Texas where I saw lots (and my first) porn flick. Can life get any better than that with drive-ins?

No, I don't think so.
:D

Why have most of them vanished?

It is more viable to run a cinema rather than a drive in. Also, the amount of land they take up would be more profitable if it were developed as housing or office space.

I Bet? alot of it had to do with curbing Violence, uno they prolly got sick of the Greasers and the Preps going at it!?.
Besides, I think those fashions
would be Horrible!!! if
they were the latest Craze!.

A piece of americana is dying.

Now everyone wants to build Stadium-seating, DTS THX this and that, complete with 18 screens, parking nightmares, and $10 to get in...not to mention the $5 popcorn and the $3 sodas.

Bring back the crappy rock filled parking lot, my beat down 68 malibu, monorial speaker and some drunken jacka s s mooning the entire drive through from the concession stand!!

I am glad to see so many drive-in fans here, I used to go with my parents in the late 70's and early/mid 80's all the time.

I remeber my mom dragging me to see E.T. at least 3 times at Topeak drive in. I also love the snack food, nachos with peppers, hot dogs, cheap cheeseburgers, popcorn with the orange butter, pretzels covered with gigantic chunks of salt and mustard, corn dogs, enough candy to send you into a coma, candy bars, snowcaps, gobbers, juju bees, soda pop, ice-cream bars, the total works.

The names are even great, Harvest Moon Drive-In, Twilite Drive-In, Rebel Drive-In, Thunderbird Drive-In, Route 66 Drive-In, Cinemagic, Cascade Theater, the cool flashing lights of the neon signs and the hustle of excited people.

I just wish the Drive-In owners around here would have muscle car nights, old horror and sci-fi double features, make it a trip down memory lane for those of us who wish we had those memories.

There is something just sad when you see a closed down dirve-in, like a lot of memories are gone, memories of peoples youth, I just find them relaxing.

Here is a pic of a now closed down drive in, with the cool cars to match, sad.

I've never been to a drive in, but what oh what I would GIVE TO GO TO ONE. Its not even funny, I'd love to go to a drive in and watch a bunch of old 50s sci-fi B movies. Those movies rule.

Drive ins totally kick ass. I went to see "Independance Day" and "Eraser" there as a double feature with some modern day hippies I knew. We took the Kombi (obviously!) and by about twenty minutes through the first movie the van was a total duchy with smoke pouring out the windows. I went to the food shop (hehee) and when I went back to the Kombi it was just as the President was concluding his heroic speech about how America was going to save the world (again).

As soon as he finished the Kombi started tooting its horn and flashing its lights, rocking side to side as everyone inside started chanting (screaming) "U.S.A!! U.S.A!! U.S.A!!" a'la Homer Simpson. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Plus where I used to live there is an old abandoned drive in about a ten minute walk from my best mate's house. We used to climb the fences at night and pretty much drink up and live there after dark. We had a ball being chased by the fat ass security guards who used to run after us when they saw us in there. It had tires to play with, big screens, etc. But the best thing was a rotten brick wall that was about waist height.

I was talking to a mate who did TKD about the power of KungFu, and he was telling me how powerful TKD was, so I bet him $20 that I could kick over a brick wall with one kick. He didn't know that the thing was falling over anyway, so he bet me. One good sidekick sent bricks and mortar flying everywhere, and took out most of the wall. He was a bit white faced when he gave me the cash. :D He later tried kicking one of the other walls and hurt his foot :D :D :D .

I love drive ins

That was another thing about drive-ins. They had such great individual names (I remember the Apache Drive- In Theater) unlike the prepackaged cookie-cutter movieplexes of today.

By the way, when I was a kid we went to the drive-in whilst riding a powder blue Ford Fairlane. Later, I went to the drive-in as a teen in my 1970 green Mustang. Let's face it, you have to go to the drive-in in the right kind of car. Not just any one will do...

There's the Astro Drive in near Dallas. It's kinda near the intersection of 30 and 35, I believe it's actually in Irving.
