Hi,

Does any one have any reference or sites regarding the tri-grams and martial arts. Specifically, I am interested in the tri-grams and their relationship to martial movement.

I have search a number of sites, but have yet to find detailed info.

any information you may have would be appreciated.

Try Da Liu:

Tai Chi Chuan and I Ching. However it may be out of print.

Might find someone here who knows a bagua text that connects some of the postures with the 8 trigrams.

Best of luck.

The trigrams are quite simply the linear version of Yin and Yang. Broken lines for yin and solid lines for yang. They represent from the bottom up, where you are, the direction you are going and where you end up. I doubt you will find much relationship with the I-Ching and martial arts. We will be posting an article on the subject at our Chi Kung international website soon. You might try Black Taoist's website. (http://www.blacktaoist.com)

I seem to remember an article by Adam Hsu which discussed how bagua does not have to be linked to tri-grams. Perhaps it's not what you are looking for but it might be interesting to check his web-site

Hi Batesy,

I don't know the article you are refering too. Perhaps he said Baguazhang does not need to be linked to the I-Ching? That might make more sense. Each of the postures of the 8 mother palms does connect with a trigram due to the expression of Yin and Yang though. Whether you make the connection in your mind or not, it's unavoidable. Curious to see the article.;)

wild child here is a good web site that I find to have great information-http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/gthursby/taoism/ this site is in my favorites.

Good looking out count, but wild child I think you should go to Dr. Painter web site he talks alot about tri-grams and their relationship to martial movement. I forget the link to his web site, but someone up on KFO should know is web site adress.

If you like you should E-mail Sifu Ben Hill at niwah64@hotmail.com he loves to talk off line about tri-grams and their relationship to martial movements and Ba Gua Zhang.

Good luck. :)

PS, Black Taoist, could you share some info in Eight_Trigrams thread about Yin Fu Bagua? (http://forum.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=12568) right now it's down below.

PPS, BTW, I was indeed correct in my assumption about Adam Hsu's article. It's actually a pretty good read.

Hi Count

Sorry for the delay, work!!!
I think you are right to say that Adam Hsu says bagua doesn't have to be linked to the I Ching. I think he may have been making a point about the tri-grams being interpreted as directional markers, much in the way that bagua could be called eight direction palm. I haven't got a copy of the essay to hand but I think it may be archived if you check out his web-site, address below

I hope this is of some interest and is more than my inane rambling.

Good luck

Batesy
