gene, This set has an older name, Three Palms, Eight Steps Within eight steps in one direction, it demonstrates the use of three different attacking palms. Asa the set reverses direction again within eight steps mixed with other techniques, there will be three attacking palms. This will hold true all the way until the set terminates.with the standard closing techniques.

Same moves but some with alternate lyrics:

#3 Advance step, Grab the Ghost palm.
#12 Step Up, Grab a Ghost palm
#13 Spike the ground, Smash the Bell
#17 Also called Tai Mt. Press Down on Head.
#18 Instead of Hawk, Back Sweep, Chicken Claws its Shouldersit on horse block and strike,
#21 Right Lotus Kick
#22 Phoenix Strikes the ears.
#23 Hook step, divide grab and punch
#34 Turn Back the body, Sit on Pan, Slap the ground
#39 Pull the bow, Shoot the tiger, Attack the leg

LTH does not perform #39 but a lyric called Night Demon Searches the Sea and Captures the Tiger..

Dear practitioners,

Are there lyrics to bot bo (NSL #8) posted anywhere on this site? As a matter of fact, lyrics for the nine-province staff and the broadsword vs. spear set, if they exist, would be a godsend. If you have any of these, especially the first, could you please share?

The search engine just isn't the same, ever since our big move. You got to do it the old fashioned way. It's like using a card catalog in the library. Man, I miss those...

I keep thinking I should merge down all the related threads someday. It would be a lot of work, but it would distill a lot too. Sadly, it's so far back on the back burner, it'll probably never happen.

Thanks one and all for the quick and kind response. The vivid and image-rich verses are clearly a useful mnemonic device if you can first connect the motion to the image. I'm wondering if these are the lyrics passed down by Gu Ru Zhang. The start of our #8, after the salute, is like this (in my description, not the lyrics):

1. Bend kness and cross palms in front of kness.
2. Wide C-step to left leading with heel as palms raise up as if carrying two pie plates.
3. Wide C-step to right, leading with heel. Palms stay in position.
4. Step together and double chop the sides.
5. Brush knees and double temple strike with fists.
6. Cross right arm over left, turn waist and look to the left back corner.
7. Impuse off of right foot and step left in that direction shooting a left palm from the energy of the step.
8. Step with right in the same line and right palm strike.
9. Pull back into right cat and grab with right. Chamber left hand to right shoulder.
10. Rise up into right crane and left chop to neck. Right elbow strike behind.

And so on.

From what you can tell from my personal description, does it conform to the lyrics you provided?

Dshanahaewon,

Hard to tell but so far to me, it in a small way it appears to be similar but I do not think it to be the same. Direction is the same but the position of the arms are different. Could be that the choice of words used in your lyrics for the movements are not a good choice for the movements. Don't know.

Maybe post more of your description since the choice of words do not seem to be lyrics.

NorthernShaolin,

All I can say is that I'm in the Gu Ru Zhang (Ku Yu Cheong) lineage and I do not study with Master Wing Lam, nor have I learned from his tapes. I'm not sure whether Jing Mo is the association that Gu Ru Zhang began, or if it's another one with a similar pronunciation. The description is certainly not poetic lyrics, but just a practical, plain-speaking description for my own use. I had hoped to use the stanzas from the fancy lyrics as hooks on which to hang my own descriptions. I believe I am clearly describing my movements. Anyway it continues as follows:
11. Pivot on left foot 180, keeping left arm extended, to face the front right corner.
12. Prepare for right chop by putting right palm on left shoulder. Step down from crane to right front and launch right chop.
13. Rotate extended arms is a big circle overhead, continuing cirlce till arms are past left side. Waist turns left with arms. Hands end up at left hip.
14. Shuffle step into a low left cat and launch a left spear to arm pit and right high block. You're now back on the straight line.
15. Rotate arms overhead to right, all the way around, stopping at right hip. Step forward with left and step again into right cat, launching a right punch at arm pit and left high block with hand in fist.
16. Right crane, right arm block knee, butterfly palm, jump, left knee strike, land in left arrow as you grab and pull to right hip.
17. 360 sweep with right leg, shift back to right leg and slap ground.
18. Rise up to left front as you strike with shoulder, elbow, wrist.
19. Step through to right arrow (weight is on left leg). Shift to right front, striking with shoulder, elbow, wrist.
20. Double knee lift (left, right, then right snap kick in midair.
21. Land both feet at same time facing 90 away from line of direction and throw a sideways right detour punch as you block overhead with left.

Well, that's all I'm going to write. I've memorized about ten more moves from there. That should be more than enough to tell if I'm doing the same Bot Bo as the one in the Jing Mo lyrics. Now I'm going to the park and practice it.

Have a great weekend.

Can you tell me who is your sifu and who did he learn from?

Just as a reference point. There are several branches of BSL since GGM Gu taught.

NorthernShaolin,

I hope my sifu doesn't mind my discussing our form outside of our class and forum because I haven't cleared this with him. Sifus can be touchy about disseminating school info to others since his knowledge is a treasure that he is passing down to us, and we have to honor it. I think you undertand. We learn in the Chinese family style, not a commercial style. Anyway, he is sifu Kisu whose own teacher is Ken Hui, whose teacher is Johnny So, whose teacher is Yim Shang Mo, whose teacher is Gu Ru Zhang. If he reads this post (and he probably will), he'll know what idiot has been blabbing about bot bo.

Okay then no need to worry. Your set is the same so the posted lyrics will work for you..

As a side noite, GGM Gu is not a member of Jing Mo Association. He was the Chief Instructor in the Kuo Shu Association.

Interesting to say the least. I never use the traditional lyric I simply teach the form as close to the way my teacher showed me. Besides I learned in Cantonese and not one of my students understands that lingo. Dshanahaewon I do not mind discussions outside of class or even questions about our style. I am interested to know who you are but I'm sure i already guessed.
