Well, not that anyone cares, but I believe when my last year of HS is over, and I am done with bodybuilding, I am going to join the marine corp. I thought about it (not long and hard) and although I have brains, I really don't give a flying **** about my life in general, and I think if a path was already put out for me I would continue to live. Plus, how cool would 'marine corp' look on a resume?

I went Army, but you will not be dissapointed in your choice. The service is a great way to go and you have many oppertunities open to you.

The military is nothing that you expect until you get there and then you realize what a great choice it was and how it will help your life.

The Marines and the Army train leaders, you will come out with life skills that a lot of places are looking for.

You want to join the Marine Corps :)

I don't think you'll have a problem with it.

A couple of things to remember:

1. Show up in good shape. In all seriousness, get a hiking backback--ubiquitous in Alaska, get some heavy objects and some hiking boots and start humping. You're going to thank me later. You won't have a problem with the strength stuff probably, but there's a major endurance issue in walking around with heavy crap on your back.

2. Pack two pairs of socks for every day in the field :) You like blisters? You won't when your feet are falling apart. Doubling up really does help....

After that, ask the Former groundpounders here for help :)

Uh, it would look even BETTER on your resume if you added the "S" on the end of Corp. This way, it doesn't read "United States Marine Corporation" :D From personal experience; a few Directors and Producers have noticed USMC on my resume, and it has done wonders for my career.

And may I just say, thank you for honoring America by becoming one of The Few and the Proud. Although you're going to go to San Diego for boot camp, so you're getting off easy

thanks for the advice . i already do the hiking thing with about 50 pounds. the whole body building thing is helped out by that. and what you guys said is exactly what i was thinking, although i have no clue what it is like in there, when you meet someone from the corp or military in general you always hear about all that they got from it.

Do it. My buddy just went thru navy boot camp (yes I know he is just a squid). He is getting great training, college paid for up to $500,000, and the day he re-enlists(after 5 years) he will have 40K sitting in his bank account. He would never have done **** otherwise and he was too **** smart to waste away at his $6/hour job. Not that there's anything wrong with that but he was just too smart not to make anything of himself.

Let me explain it this way. If I had to do it all over again, I might not do it.

But I am **** glad that I did it :)

To clarify though: I'm not a Marine :)

If you have a brain like you stated you have ,have you thought of the USMC officer (PLC program) programs. I am a reservist in the Marine Corps and I just completed my first part of my of my officer trainging in VA. I have two years left of college and one session left of my plc program. THe pay is better and you will have the experience and your education when you get out. I would of gone through enlisted boot again if I had to though. It is an experience you will never forget. The PLC program is the officer form of boot. They PT your a$$ out there and you are sleep deprived. There mental discipline there as not as hard as boot. I think that both ways enlisted or officer have their benefits. You should look into it if you ever plan to go to college. If not good luck and come prepared. Beware of the eggs in boot.:D Also make sure that you are some what mentally strong so you do not go crazy like some freaks in there.

Join the AIR FORCE instead, trust me on this one, I told a freind the same thing, compare the respect you get, the quality of life, perks...everything, look at the percentage of air force vs marines who get college done while in. Guess what...the AF is extremely higher!!! My friend was extremely sorry he chose the Marines over the Air force once he was in awhile. Ive also met Army guys say they wish every day that they would have joined the Air Force...ok Im tired..end of rant..
email me if you want more info on the AF.

He is right about them being spoiled:D They also do have a lot more time to go to school since they are not always busy like us. Just playing but hey do you really want to be a fly boy or a Marine. Hey it is your choice. You will do things in the Marines that you could never do in the Air Force. It is your choice but I rarely hear anybody talk about the Air Force as they talk about the Marines. We have history and believe youll love your dress blues. THe few the Proud the Marines says it all. Hey Gary just messing with you though we are all in this together.

Military is a good experience and prep for Life.

I must say I enjoyed the 8 month that I had to put in for my Country.
Plus, I got to see quite a bit of my lovely Home Country during exercises.

Peace.

P.S.: We don't get a choice, everybody gets to go and get screamed at. :D

First of all, the Corps may end up being a good place for you. Its a valuable and maturing experience. However, it could also end up being a BAD decision. Believe me, it is a hell of a commitment even if you go reserves instead of active. If you decide to do it, just make sure that you are making an informed decision and that you know what you are getting into. You should also have an idea as to how you want this decision to fit into your overall plans for the future. It could be a great chance to mature and learn a little responsibility while earning money for college. Or hell, maybe you want to be a career marine! What kind of skills do you want to learn? Just cuz all marines wear the same uniform does not mean that a marine is a marine is a marine. Let's face it, supply & logistics is not the same as being an embassy guard, which is not the same as being in a helo crew, which is not the same as being a mechanic, which is not the same as being in the infantry. Oh, and if you have fantasies of being some high speed spec ops $hit kicker remember that the slots for units like Force Recon are extremely limited and that you probably have to be among the best in the grunts before you'll even be considered for it.

If you want to join the Corps, you had better have a good reason to do it and know what you plan to accomplish by becoming a marine. Despite whatever BS those fools at the recruiting office will try to feed you, it is NOT the place for you to retreat to just because you have no direction or you don't give a flying **** about your life in general. If you don't have direction, then FIND direction before you make such a big decision. If that direction involves the Corps, then great. But you may find that it doesn't. Being a marine involves a lot more then just strutting around town in a cool looking uniform. Sure, it'll feel **** good for awhile that you have earned that proud title...and yes the uniforms look **** good. But in the grand scheme of things this stuff doesn't count for $hit. What DOES count is what you feel you can really get out of being a marine. If you want leadership skills, you're better off considering the officer program than you are enlisting. Being enlisted will teach you whole lot more about following orders than it will about giving them. And as for looking good on a resume, don't be so quick to generalize. Of course people will think "hey, you were a marine...i respect you for it." but that doesn't mean that you have the technical background needed for the real world. If you were in the infantry for example, sure you'll learn tactics and get field experience while you're in, but those skills do not generalize to the professional world unless you're becoming a police officer or something like that. Once you get back out to the world, you start from the bottom. Of course if you learn a technical trade while you're serving, that's different. Or if you come out an officer with education and leadership experience, that of course is different as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to discourage you. The Marines can be a great and valuable experience and there sure as hell is nothing wrong with serving your country. But you have to know what you're getting into and know what you plan to get out of it. Don't do it for the wrong reasons or you'll end up regretting it.

Think first!

Go, but drop the "I don't give a sh!t about my life".

Remember what Patton said, "No poor b@stard ever won a war laying down his life for his country. You win a war by making the other poor b@stard die for HIS country".

Slight paraphrase.

Just go on in, and do your job better than anyone else. That's good enough.

A Marine IS a Marine IS a Marine, and that's not some mis-quote from a recruiting poster. You might find some wimpy looking ****z who faked their way through Parris Island (or more likely San Diego!), but I guarantee if you push that ****z' buttons, he will go off on you. I watched a 5'3" runt go after another Marine who was about my size (6'2" 225) over in the gulf. Funniest thing I ever saw :D

I was actually supposed to be a pencil pusher in my battalion. But every weekend (ok, I was a reservist, bite me :P) we ran, went out into the field, qualified on the m-16, and performed force marches. Only the WM's got off easy, and that wasn't all the time. Most of them that were healthy or whatever had to do whatever the male Marines were doing. Over in the gulf, I ran patrols, performed rear area security, and escorted supplies to the front lines while carrying an M-60. And every now and then, I had to man the .50 cal.

Why you ask? (ok, maybe you weren't ASKING) Because EVERY MARINE IS A BASIC RIFLEMAN. Every Marine has to pass certain basic health, fitness, and weapon qualifications, or to not so eloquently put it, they bounce your a s s out of there in a heartbeat. In the heat of combat, everyone who can walk or at least pull a trigger is part of the security of the camp, or wherever one might be stationed.

And that's the fact, jack

Not everthing is going to be fun in the Marines but it will shure be an experience. Make sure you get a good MOS and get stationed somewhere other than 29 palms. Believe me there will be times that you may feel why you signed the contract but you will never forget the good times. Like African tiger said a Marine is a Marine regardless if you are admin. OR recon. Do what you want to do. There is always going to be complainers that go to the Marines or any service and say it was a waist of time and while there in they will be the sh!tberds when they are in . So look out for them.
