I don't know the pole form, so I'm only speculating here....

... but the pole form seems to be an add-on, rather than a natural extension of the other forms in the WC system.

I know it has its roots in the Red Junk Opera, but other than rounding out the system with a weapon, are there other WC principles at work?

I see a lot of traditional horse stance which is not practiced in WC hand forms.

it definately has wing chun at work in it, what comes to mind most specifically is that there is some chin na in it, believe it or not

The traditional horse stance is used for some developmental drills. Wing chun adapted the pole for its own purposes...so the stances and motions are wing chun motions....with allowance for adjusting to the weight of the pole- so you can control the pole.
