I found this, on covering (http://www.dream-tools.com/tools/messageview.mv?view+wingchun+172+index). imo well written and to the point.

is chi sau covering exist in other branches of shaolin systems. It seems to be an interesting approach to fighting... practicing to hit and not get hit. are these drills part of any shaolin arts? or is this only wing chun thing?

I heard mantis has similar exercises but no one explained the concept before. it seems as tho it should be a universal thing.

mthandz,

Drills are in Shaolin but it really depends on the sifu if he/she wishes it to be part of the curriculum. Drills are usually developed when the sifu feels that his students are not understanding the concepts and drills are a method of a quick way of re-enforcing concepts.

Usually, but not always true, styles that stress drills are lacking in other parts of the art. Remember drills take up time and when in reality, one can be learning other facets of the art. Drills are usually developed right out of the sets and many sifus do not like to teach this way because it only results in short term results. The student only 'sees' one application and 'may never see' beyond the obvious application.
