Look for all the same spots that you´d look for in any school-regardless of nation or related subject.
is the teacher respectful?
Is he/she respectful towards you?
Does he let you watch a class for free? (Not any recommendation)
Does he/she let you throw insults towards him/her,let you urinate on their tatami or burn down the school? (Could not resist:D ;) Just kidding. If they DO,you may as well leave)
Do students seem to know what they are doing?
Is the school recognized&respected in general?
Is their training area clean and does it look decent?
if you want maximum results with minimal effort ;) go sign up into some site/message board and ask them.
Judo´ll probably give you lots of throwing,if that´s what you are after.
Jujutsu/jujitsu then,is another thing,an art with possibly a large collection of different types of techniques (of course, schools vary, like teachers) If you want self-protection,jujitsu could be more on the emphasis.
Rest is up to ya.
I hope this helps.

Let us know what you come up with.

Hey Suntzu,
So you had fun down in New Orleans? How did it go besides being thrown around by cungs guy?

You should get MP to hook you up, seems he's got the 411 and connections for grappling down in the Baltimore/D.C. area.

awww man, I had a ball… a lot of talent came thru this time… oakland, houston, etc etc… dude, we was fightin in a bar, they had a ring smack in the middle of that joint... the next one is gonna be in a casino... Cungs team can do it all but I think I peeped out a weakness… even had some WWF style drama between Cung and this Captain America lookin dude from baton rouge… this dude shoulda been a pro fightin a C class fighter from Cungs team and then he wants to show off like he Jake the Snake or some ish and Cung and Rudi seemed a lil hot under the collar... but enuff with the gossip...

I'm gonna shoot MP an e-mail as soon as I find what I did with it… and I'm gonna post a link about this judo guy out here that I'm gonna check out today and see if anybody know him…

oh yeah… I posted a brief commentary over on Marvin's site…

"Our Sensei is John T. Anderson, a Shichidan in the sport of Judo. He has been studying Judo since 1946 while stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii with the Navy. East Coast Champion, a 4 time East Coast Masters Champion, and a 10 time A.A.U. Maryland State Champion. Through out his Judo career, he has studied under many Senseis including Takehiko Ishikawa, Donn Draeger, Kenzo Uyeno and Lanny Miyamoto. Because of his love for Judo and his desire to see its' benefits spread to those who were seeking, John Anderson founded Baltimore Judo Club in 1950 where he continues to teach today."

awww… I forgot about the ear thing… how long does something like that take to develop???? So I guess a sticky locker room is a good thing??? And I'll BRB… need to look up randori…

randori=free sparring

plenty of it=good practice

I'm not sure whether choked out if you don't bow=good or bad though.

Look for safety and respect. Judo's principles are BIG on "mutual benefit".

If you see some black belt whippin' butt, its probably bad as a junior.

Usual things really. Respect is big, lots of bowing.

Should be about 30 mins of complete "follow the leader" technique IMHO, and about 30 mins of groundfighting.

Rest should be kata and randori.

Not just sensei should teach, all players hae diff. opionions, look for people ready to share knowledge.

LOTS of practice with breakfalls. We have to be proficient with breakfalls before we are shown ANYTHING else. We begin class with warmup, followed by 30 mins of matwork, followed by technique drills.teaching and finally randori.

before you are allowed to begin training, it's mandatory that you watch at least one class so that you can see what you are getting into.

Checkout a gu named Tom Clark in b-more. He is of Larry Hartsell's instructors in JKD grappling. They have some pretty good basics for grappling when i attended his seminar.
