I am still a newbie in the kun tao style brought to America by Willem Reeders. I am pretty positive the name is ho chow kun tao.

Merryprankster

I don't actually train.

I am a bespectacled, pizza faced blimp who plays first person shoot-em-ups all day, at least, when my mom's not yelling at me to clean my room and get the skid marks out of my tighty-whiteys.

I just sit at home and furtively masturbate to MA flicks.

SevenStar, There are four different styles of Kajukenbo. Ch'uan Fa, Kenpo, Wun Hop Kuen Do, and one other one that I can't remember at the moment. I imagine they are all greatly similar, but each one focuses more on one element of the whole system a bit more strongly then the rest. At least that's my understanding of it.

wun hop kuen do - I remember that being popularized by dacascos some years back. never heard of the others though - what does chuan fa kajukenbo focus on?

awakenwired
06-14-2002, 10:43 PM
Ch'uan Fa focuses more on the Kung Fu, soft styles of the art. But doesn't neglect the others either. I believe it was brought about by Emperado, one of the Original founders, 10 or 15 years maybe after the Original Kenpo based Kajukenbo was first developed. I'm going off memory at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that's fairly accurate. You're right about Dacascos, I think his style was the last one to come out.

Most everything I know about Kun Tao(which isn't much) came from a fake teacher who said he learned from Guy Seveli, allthough my teacher at the time called him Guy Chong for some odd reason :P . I think it's Indonesian though.

kuntao is a chinese/indonesian martial art, popularized in the us by the de thoaurs brothers. there are many styles of silat, the most popular probably being kuntao, pentjak and mande muda (sp?) Silat was developed along the same lines as kali - a no nonsense killing method, as it was developed during times of war. The style - at least as taught by some - will get "mystical" in that it deals with the elements and other things. I've also read that there are mantras that the fighters would use to provide them with speed, strength, protection, etc. depending on the mantra they use. I have read this about old kalistas also.

I'm rather inexperienced with the style, but send a PM to MonkeySlapToo - he's been training in kuntao and shuai chiao for several years.

If you're training the Kun Tao through Uncle Bill's line, you're gonna be a bad Mofo one of these days. Kun Tao has my unwavering respect.

As for me, it's currently Shuai Chiao and BJJ. I'm being taught some "other stuff", but it's all taught in relationship to the Shuai Chiao and not as it's own thing per se. before that, it was William CC Chen's Taiji.

I studied a "Royal Kun Tao" MA back in early 80`s under Thomas Pepperman, Toronto Canada via Pittsburg. He said it was Indonesian. Talking about a fighter, geez, an awesome fighting art! At that time, Thomas took my fighting to a whole differant level. The last I heard he was in Tampa, Fla. Has anyone here ever trained with Mr. Pepperman?

Brad Souders - Out of curiosity, could you expand on how you work aikido and silat into your training? Thanks.

Brad Souders
06-15-2002, 09:55 PM
We work aikido in with our empty hand against weapon mostly. Sometimes we also have bouncers that come in and we use principles from aikido's movements to help them "take out" the trash :)

As for Silat we basically use a couple throw out of their system that seem to come in very handy.

I don't know if you saw my other post but checkout http://thepowerfanfilm.com and click on other videos and download the one called TMT promo. It's in quicktime and is 35mb long. It is an actual training session at my school that my cousin edited and put into a music video. There you can see the different styles we blend in.

I don't doubt that what I am learning and more so what my teacher knows is legit. I think it is a very cool fighting art that reminds me a lot of bagua mixed with some other southern chinese techniques. What I am learning is considered a royal style. I don't think I am learning much of the "royal" or family system yet, but a blend of what he teaches. My teacher is Philip Selmon who is a 25 year student of Grandmaster Arthur Sikes. I will stick with him for a while to see how far he can help me go and how deep the well of knowledge is there.
I don't know for a fact but I have read that the late Willem Reeders, who brought the system here, was a Dutch Indonesian and was supposedly from both chinese and dutch royal bloodlines. He learned from many chinese and indonesian teachers, but his main teacher was his great uncle Leong Liu Seong. I am not sure if that name is correct or not. Now what is taught is a system that I think contains or is a blend of 7 internal styles. I think they are tai chi, hsing i, bagua, qigong, silat, the family kun tao and maybe liuhebafa. Not too sure about those though. From what I have been able to find out about Master Reeders is he is somehow related to or grew up with a few of the older De Thouares and Devries brothers. I have read that Uncle Bill has a lot of respect for him and I am pretty sure that he said that master Reeders would master systems in no time and would then be sent to another teacher. I am exited about studying this science and hope other people here may be familiar with this style so we can have some interesting discussions, especially when I get more experience . I know that Taomonkey studies this style here, what about anyone else?

That's cool. I'm positive that what you're learning is 1000x better than the "Kun Tao" that I learned. Looking back, I think our Kun Tao form may have been a few basic exercises ripped off of Daniel Wengs Shui Jiao instructional video, modified to the point of near uselessness and strung together, lol. I know the fake Kungfu system I learned is localized mostly here in Columbus area, and the guy teaching it lost all his students. :-P

The truth is that everybody here (and everywhere) studies his OWN style.

There are as many styles as there are individuals. No two folks bring the same things to the table, even identical twins reared in the same environment.
