View Full Version : How long can you hold your breath?

Not that it will necessarily help you servive a choke, I'm just wondering what average is.

I'm talking your absolute max, so if you've been sparring for 5 minutes first it probably won't be as long. Say you have time to prepare, so can hyperventilate first or whatever to help. Careful, don't pass out.

I saw this show on tv about these women in Japan who are coral divers or something and can hold their breath for like 2 or 3 or maybe it was 5 minutes. I don't remember, but it was a really long time. They learn some technique to slow down their metabolism and therefore don't require as much oxygen. They go down really deep (ow my ears!) and get pearls or something. Sorry I don't remember it too well :)

I have no idea how long I can hold my breath. And for the record, chokes cut off blood flow as well as air, so holding your breath definately wouldn't help. :)

The world free dive record is something over 330' in depth. Scary stuff.

Three replies and only 2 votes? wtf? :)

I held my breath for like 1 minute and 10 seconds once I think. I think I'll try again right now.

I just got one minute 15 seconds. I took deep breaths for maybe 20 seconds beforehand and I wasn't really dying when I let it out, but I was like "1:15 is a good amount."

When I was working on my diving, i cold hold my breath for almost 3 minutes. I had to learn, just in case an emergency came up! But, now that I smoke crack all the time, I don't think I can do that anymore....just to let ya all know!!:D

I used to just randomly hold my breath all the time for no real reason. I got pretty good at it. When I go swimming I usually spend most of my time underwater trying to swim as far as I can.

You can hold for longer than you think, usually some kind of panic reflex makes you want to let go.

Just tried, after one deep breath, on an uncomfortably full stomach, in very high heat and humidity: 1:04 minutes! I'm ecstatic!! Might try again after 'losing some weight'!!:D

Xesball,
i canīt do it either, could have something to do with having asthma (which is luckily fading away) and constant breathing problems.
My record was 40 seconds,itīs been a time I tried it though.

I just did 1.35 without any bother, I reckon I could have done a couple of minutes before I really started to feel it, I've been doing a lot of cardio work over the last year so maybe that's had an effect.

3:37 when i was 15 years old, but then I was a State class swimmer too. I have no idea how long I can hold it now, probably not quite as long. I would test myself again, but I am too lazy.

2 minutes

does the length of time you can hold your breath for reflect upon your cardiovascular condition?

5:20 ... I also have a 5 L lung capacity. I played Sousaphone for 8 years ... strange is that it doesn't take much for me to get "ou of breath" and one of my biggests problems is that when excirising I can't breath though my nose ... too small I guess ...

Hmmm. Never tried that before, but I got uncomfortable after 1 min. I think I could do more if I prepared for it though. I think 2 mins would be fairly easy, but more than that seems outrageous! I've seen those divers too. I met this guy in Fiji that used to dive and spear fish. He could stay down well over four minutes!

What does 5 L lunch capacity mean?

5 L lung capicity means that I can hold 5 L of air in my lungs. L is ISO for Liter ...

Just tried then with no practically no preparation.
Got to 1:30 with practically no strain what so ever (which suprised me). After that i got bored so i let it out. (i really hate the feeling of being that out of breath too) I reckon i could get up to 3 minutes if i had to.

Ironically, i'm one of the first to get out of breath at training.
But i've got a slight advantage in the holding breath department.
When i was little, i amazed teachers by staying underwater for a minute at a time when our school when swimming.
Ten years of playing the saxaphone (alto and Baritone) probably gave me slightly above average lung capacity/power/whatever.
