The term "Northern Shaolin" refers to a system of over 30 styles that all originated from the same region and are all based on the same fundamental techniques. All Northern Shaolin styles are External and they originated in the Shaolin Temple on Mt. Songshan in Henan Province. It is one of the most popular systems of Kung Fu in China today. Northern Shaolin emphasizes leg and kicking techniques with a middle to long range attack. It combines the self defense techniques of martial arts, the flexibility, strength and acrobatic skills of gymnastics, and the classic patterns of motion acquired through precision and grace as found in ballet. Northern Shaolin also embodies the inner peace and emotional tranquility inspired through Eastern philosophies and disciplines. Due to the vast number of styles in Northern Shaolin, no one has ever mastered the entire Shaolin system. Therefore, Sifu Wang teaches those elements which he feels are the most effective and practical - these are forms that were taught at the original Nan-King Guoshu Institute.
