An excellent book on the topic is:

The Origins of the Tiandihui: The Chinese Triads in Legend and History

by Dian H. Murray, Qin Baoqi
Stanford Univ Pr (S); ISBN: 0804723249; (May 1994)
====================

It gives one some fascinating insights into the history and traditions of the triads and Heaven and Earth Societies.

Given that there is a lot of discussion around Wing Chun and it's use within such groups, it makes for a good reference point for discussions around those points.

The hardcover book is $60 on Amazon.com, perhaps you all can find it cheaper elsewhere.

Hi David,

This is an excellent book and one I heartily recommend for anyone interested in the subject. I'd also add "Secret Societies Reconsidered", edited by Ownsby (sp?), and (especially for those interested in where WCK fits in), "Strangers at the Gate" which deals specifically with the Red Turban Rebellion in Foshan, which involved the opera performers of the Red Junk under the leadership of Li Wenmao.

These books also, IMHO, should help set the standard for how martial history work goes forward.

Rgds,
