#8381.

Personally, I feel that disney is no longer the Disney I grew up with.
Too much orientated towards Bucks and not towards the what Walt Disney stood for.

They fired all thegood Animators and now the execs decide on what goes into the animation and how.
Bunch of friggin wankers.
They corrupt our young ones by stereotyping.

Anybody seen the original pics of "The little Mermaid" they had phallic symbols imbeded in them.

The Mouse and Barney must die.

Peace.

I just got back from a vaca to Disney World, and that place is crazy now. It's my first time there in about 17 years, and it has changed quite a bit. They are geared towards bucks, but they get those bucks by first class entertainment. I was doing the trip as a favor to my girlfriend for her family reunion, but I ended uphaving a great time. BTW, I agree their recent movies suck as does stealing other's work.

Did anyone see the Disney Shaolin Soccer trailer (http://progressive.stream.aol.com/aol/us/moviefone/movies/2002/shaolinsoccer_012713/shaolinsoccer_trlr_dl.mov)?

Check out the dubbing. They gave away most of the jokes. They used Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting! They even painted fake underpants on the naked goalkeeper!

Mother****ers!

I hate Disney.

First I thought that it wasn't all that much to get upset about, then when I realised how much that movies of these kind suffer from this sort of treatment I thought that this was a good idea!!

Thanks for all the support guys! :) If you signed and think like we do here, please show this for your friends/loved ones.

Take care, CHANGE THE WORLD!!!

What, you didn't notice that in Mulan, the mongolians had cat-eyes, pointed ears, fangs, and were noticibly darker than the other characters? Wishing for fair treatment of anybody from Disney is like wishing for a unicorn to give you a magic ride to candyland.

That said, I'm signing.

It just means that us hardcore sinophiles will know the truth. Ain't it always so? We'll know that the goalie should be bare butt. Disney's right, Middle America is not ready...:p

What the hell did Disney do to Fist of Legend???

That is one of my favourite Kung Fu flicks! I had mine directly imported from Hong Kong, but if I find that they've doctored my movie I will personally send them all to hell!!!

Just think of all the chicks that we can lure up to our entertainment centers with the promise of unedited goalie butt. Do you know of an original aspect ratio, original language, uncut DVD of Fist of Legend, or Drunken Master 2?

No?

That's because there isn't one, because Disney has worldwide rights to these movies and wants everyone to only have access to their 'Americanised' versions.

Did you also hear that they were putting pressure on some of the Hong Kong retailers to stop exporting films like Shaolin Soccer to the US?

kieofwoo

Disney's idea of the world doesn't coincide with the majority of the world's views. Not that the rest fo the world agrees, but that's the whole point. Why can't people have their own opinions and ideas of how things should be? e.g. how to make films.

It would be easier and cheaper for Disney Corp to release Hong Kong films as they get them. They are actually spending money to edit these films so that they fit in with the "Disney Ideal" as they think that they will sell more this way.

Disney may be right, it may be more profitable to "Disney-fy", but what message does that send out to directors and film makers? If you make a film, even if it is succesful, we can change it to fit our business plan and distribute it in that form?

Disney are a worldwide corporation and if they used their presence to just distribute these films, then no one would be complaining, infact I myself would applaud Disney for helping to disseminate relatively unknown films to a wider audience. (You wouldn't believe how popular kung fu films, even really bad ones like Streetfighter, are in places like India.) Instead Disney have decided that they are more than distributors in this case. Actually, they are pirating source material from Hong Kong, re-editing it in their image, and releasing it anew to make themselves more money.

That is not right.

You guys are forgetting that Disney didn't put a gun to the heads of the Hong Kong filmakers to sell the rights to these movies. I don't think they are complaining about Disney's $$$. Bottom line its all about the cash. This is all about business, whether any of us like it or not money controls the world.

We are all better off talking about kung fu anyhow.

Peace.

No not forgetting that at all. Yeah it's a shame that distribution in original form only wasn't incorporated into the sales agreement between HK studios and Disney.
But it wasn't and the ball is definitely in Disney's court. And that should be the focus of our attempts to rectify the situation.

Don't forget that one of these petitions has actually worked. Disney were about to release Princess Mononoke without the original language soundtrack when they heard the outrage of fans around the world via web-based petititons and changed their minds.

Surely that should spur us on in our efforts?

That's so cool. Now my uncut original copies of Shaolin Soccer, Fist of Legend & DM II are worth even more. Man, I'll be fighting the chicks off with sticks when they hear this. They'll do anything to see my DVD of non-undepanted goalie butt.

Seriously, I've always found cross cultural censorship very amusing. I remember seeing a Japanese edition of Playboy, where it is (or was) illegal to show pubic hair. All the centerfolds have panties, and rather plain ones at that. I've also seen Rapeman, the manga that was banned here (and rightfully so in my mind, that stuff was gruesome.) I also remember having my luggage contents spread out all across the Beijing airport because a border guard saw magazines in the Xray. I was bringing copies of stuff I had written to my monk friends and the guard thought it might be porn, very criminal in PRC. He looked at every page of every issue yelling at me in Mandarin, as if that would help.

I sold out all the remaining copies of Shaolin Soccer we brought over before Miramax (not Disney, oddly) shut us down. I had been tipped off that the rights purchase was imminent and mentioned it, perhaps even here on the forum (ah, my memory) and they sold. To the victor, the spoils.

When Disney comes busting down my door to conficate my copy, then we have a problem. Until then, I got the goods. The unedited, real stuff. Tell the chicks. :p

Disney = Miramax = Buenavista
Same company

There will always be ways of getting your hands on the original copies, for those who know - i.e. everyone here. But wouldn't it be nice if Joe Schmoe on the street could walk into a random store and get himself a copy of the original Shoalin Soccer?

Way of the Dragon (Bruce's 3rd, the one in Rome) was heavily edited in the UK until very recently. You would get a copy expecting what was wildly acknowledged (at the time) as the best fight on film ever, only to watch a riddiculously cut up final fight where old Chuckie goes from spritely to mangled with a broken leg in a single cut. I think the whole fight lasts like 30 seconds in this version. Watching that version, I could not understand what the hype was about and also as the rest of the film is heavily edited - whole fight scenes removed - I came away feeling "this film's crap".
It was only years later watching the uncut version, that I understood and agreed that it was indeed a great fight.

Come on GeneChing, you can't have all the chicks! :D

Your uncut versions of DMII and Fist of Legend - are they full widescreen, or cropped by any chance? Do you notice in DMII (I have the Hong Kong DVD too) that a lot of the fight scenes feel a bit cramped, that some of the action happens offscreen? That's because there's a large portion of the screen area that's been chopped off the sides.

Wouldn't it be nice if some kind company would release a definitive version with those extra bits of screen back on the left and right where they should be? Preferably still uncut and with the original language?

Well they can't, because Disney has the rights.

I can't believe this doesn't **** you off in the least.

A while back, I was messing around with some new studio equipment my brother in law got, and I ended up wasting a whole weekend making a mock radio trailer for a movie I entitled "Day of the Ubbermouse". It was made to sound like the story of WWII, only told through cartoon. The Hitler character was The Ubbermouse, a helium voiced rodent-tyrant bent on world domination and the destruction of mongrel cartoon characters like tom and jerry, wren and stimpy, and especially Popeye.

Throughout the trailer, snippets of a decidedly hitlerian speach done in a total Mickey Mouse voice were interspersed between such quotes as "Steempy, what have they done to your beautiful eyes?" and "Oh Popeye!". The trailer ended with foreboding Wagner like horns playing a really twisted and scary version of "It's a small world after all".

So, you see, time management issues are nothing new to me.

kf: Thanks for clearing up the Miramax/Disney thing. I suspected as much. And I can have all the chicks....dont' tell my wife ;)

kffr: Now if I was that much of a hippie, I'd be sticking flowers in your VCR.

wh: OK, OK, I'll 'fess up. I can't stand the edited versions. But fortunately, I never have to see them. I almost always see the originals. Both DMII and Fist of Legend I saw on the big screen, unedited (S.F. Chinatown theaters used to rock until video detsroyed it - now that ****es me off!) I got a direct import of Shaolin Soccer on DVD and watched it on a good buddy's fat projection TV. So the re-edits don't really affect me much. Actually, I thought some of the editing of Jackie's Police story 4 were good choices - it took out some of Jackie's self indulgence. But admittedly, that was an exception.

I do agree that a definative uncut original version would be best. But it doesn't look like we'll get that. So those of us who know, well, we got the goods. And the chicks.

Disney is evil!

I heard some troubling details of the filming of lemmings - yes the suicidal little furballs. In one documentary WD actually herded the poor blighters off a cliff and filmed their 'unusual behaviour'. Scary!
