I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the origin of the short jian set performed by Chow Yun-Fat near the beginning of the film at night in the courtyard?

I'm prinicpally curious to know whether there is a sylistic origin to those movements, or whether the set was improvised choreography.

Improvised choreography much of it modern wushu. Most of the trainers & choreographers assisting Yuen Woo Ping were Wushu persons if not Hong Kong stuntperformers.

Many of the moves in Chow's routine can be seen in the current International Compulsory Straight Sword routine.

Hope that helps.
