well I'm not Gene and I don't play him on t.v, but that is a grain leaf or willow leaf broadsword, it's two handed and the man weilding it is likely diminutive in stature by the looks of it.

It's a bagua dao...it's an oversized version of a regular dao, that is quite specific to baguazhang. The man under (I believe it's Fu ZhenSong, but I could be wrong) is likely to have a very small frame, however it doesn't change the fact that this saber is nevertheless a very BIG ASS saber.

I read in an article somewhere on the web that the big dao in that picture weighed 30 pounds, but I can't find it right now. Fu Chen Sung had incredible strength for his size. I heard from someone who grew up in Hong Kong(Name withheld) that his big stone ball that he used to condition himself with was so heavy, that no one else but Fu could pick it up and use it. This same person said that he had to lift 100 pound blocks and he also tried to lift the ball, and that the ball was heavier than those. Fu would pick up the ball, roll it from one palm up the arm, over the neck, and down the other arm, then pop it up in the air, with the ball landing on his chest, dissolving the force. Then he would roll it around again and repeat the process for a while.

This is one of the best articles about Fu that I have found on the web.

Here's a picture of a modern day bagua teacher,Xie Peiqi, with a huge bagua dao.

Actually, it's a one-handed sword, and not a willow-leaf, nor is the wielder particularly small. The over-sized dao is a training tool of baguazhang.

Here's Mike Patterson with a slightly smaller, albeit still large one, courtesy of his site, www.hsing-i.com http://www.hsing-i.com/weapons/shrfu8.jpg.

Here's John Painter with one http://site.netopia.com/bagua/nss-folder/pictures/DrPainterbaguado.jpg from www.circlepalms.com .

From John Bracy's site www.chiarts.com http://www.chiarts.com/gfx/lineage.GIF . Look on the far left and far right.

I've seen those big Dao in Bagua. They are used as hand and a half swords, but I'd use it as a two hander personally.

If you like big swords, here's our biggest. The phot odesn't to it justice - http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/455x50.html

No he's not. Also, the swords tend to be made proportional to the size of the wielder.

Then why can he not close his hand round the handle?

He seems to manage ok; you shouldn't hold a sword with your nails digging into your palm (you'll note Mike Patterson is using the same grip, despite a quite smaller sword). What about all the other examples that have been posted: bagua - a conspiracy of midgits?

Being a midget is hard guys.

1. they prefer to be called "little people" and...

2. how would you like to ride a bus with nothing but a crotch view of the world?

think about it. That's right, the sword is good.

So not "willow" leaf, are you certain on the "grain leaf"?

I know it's for Pa Kua, but is it not called a "grain leaf knife"?

The swords are defintely not small..... THey were very large and very heavy.

I have an old issure of Aiki News with an article in it on the use of the Otachi (great Sword). In it there's a picture of a guy....certainly not large, however the Tsuba (guard) of the sword was about even with the top of his head. This was the standard formula for the length of the sword.

Just 2 more things in life I'll never be good at...
