What do you do with CLF when you're past 50 years old? I mean you can't use all those kwa, sow, chap still can you- and still deliver that kind of power?

Or do you work on more of the internal sets to develop a different type of ging/power?

I spoke to a clf sifu and he said that they work on more internal sets as they get older because when they get old, theycan't use all the long arm techniques.

This is no disrespect to choy lay fut. It's an awesome style. I respect all styles of kung fu.

YOu can see Master Chen Yong fa in a video in clfma.com, he is 51 and look him.
I don't know if he is an exception, but CLF is much than long arm, there is a lot of principles of the internal arts.

On that note.. In case anyone hasn't noticed, Master Chen at http://www.clfma.com/ has started a series of articles online called the Master Series. Sounds like it'll be some pretty cool stuff. Here's their description:

Entitled the "CLF Master Class" series, this collection of articles will be unique in many ways. Firstly, it will be presented by Grand Master Chen Yong Fa, the great, great grandson of the founder of Choy Lee Fut, Chan Heung. This is the first time we know of that a Choy Lee Fut master of his stature has ever embarked upon such a large project.

Secondly, the series of articles will be accompanied by photos and video files of Master Chen demonstrating the techniques and training discussed in each paper. So, for the first time, video material of Chan Family Choy Lee Fut will be made publicly available.

Thirdly, this series will be freely available via CLFMA.com to the public, as a growing resource for all Choy Lee Fut students. It will also stand as a testament to the power and diversity of Choy Lee Fut, exhibited by an accomplished and renowned practitioner.

My CLF sifu is 47 and I wish I could generate the kind of power he does. Remember, all the power comes from the waist not the arms.

I think the longer you have been involved in clf the easier it is to continue to practice it. although you might not have the dexterity and power you can still use it well into your older age. If you start out at an advanced age then the more trouble you will have when you get older. If your lucky you will have someone to teach you the internal sets. from what I've found out not to many sifus know them.

I think Monk Weed hit it right on the head. If you've been doing CLF from a younger age, sure you'll be able to continue it in the advanced age, if moderation is practiced.

Someone who hasn't done any martial arts, or for that matter, anything physical and is in their 50's, they can still learn CLF, but at a more gradual pace. One of the keys to CLF is to be completely relaxed during the execution of elements. If you work on teaching them the relaxation aspects of executing, say gwa choy, have them do it slowly, then build it up from there, I think that older person can really benefit.

I think young CLF instructors can greatly benefit from teaching older people - it is a good challenge to see how relaxed and flexible you really are.

Urban Tea,

Not only can you see Master Chen Yong Fa perform on his new videos, but my sifu (Master Ng Fu Hang) who is Master Chen's older cousin will be 60 next Sunday, and he has incredible power that he can generate very quickly. The harder or faster I try to go with him, the harder and faster he gets with me. I've been training with him for quite some time now, and still find some of the things he's capable of amazing, especially at that age.

Are there video clips of Chen Yong Fa on that site? If so can someone give me the link (s) ??

Perhaps age 50 is not what I should have used. I thought about some of the posts and one of my sifus is 60 years old and he can still do a hand/weapon set better any top sifu in their 30-40's.

But what happens when they are 70? Or perhaps they shouldn't be fighting or worrying about things like that at that age?
