You know, we've been working on our 10 Year Anniversary Benefit Gala video (see http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=230 ) where Master Tu Jin-Sheng pulled a truck with his Iron Crotch. We had to delete the actual crotch shot by putting one of those digital blurred boxes over the 'objectionable material,' just like you see them do for porn star ads in the newspaper. Well seems that some of our staff are just as objectionable, including me, Margie & Johnny.
Check this out:
me:
http://www.blackbeltshop.com/shaolin_style_warrior_monk_robes.htm
m & j:
http://www.blackbeltshop.com/fast_strike_uniforms.htm

I'm not sure if I should be insulted or not. I suppose I should compare their sales without faces with ours with faces, before I voice an opinion.

Here are the uncensored versions (kids, be sure an get your parents permission first):
me: http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/shaolstylwar1.html
m & j http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/fasstrikun11.html

While I definately support all of our retail distributors, even though they my censor my face like Master Tu's iron uglies, I hope that you buy from www.MartialArtsMart.com, since sales from there help support the forum here. If you use any link from our forum, it gets tallied towards our forum and allows us to keep this baby running.

I wonder if I can get on the Howard Stern show now...

Hey, don't diss Stern...
Do they have the right to use those pictures? Or have they been altered enough (for the better)

Are you kidding? I would consider an appearence on the Howard Stern show one of the highlights of my career. Especially if I could plug our soon-to-be-released Iron Crotch videos.

As for rights, technically by the strictest letter of the law, they shouldn't just take our pics, but if they are selling our merchandise, it would be silly for us to crack down on them. They did remove the www.MartialArtsMart.com watermark (can't say I blame them) and there other pics of ours that keep the faces. I'm just lucky I guess - I must have been a porn star in a past life. We would only crack down on them if they were using our images to sell someone else's goods (and this has happened, several times in fact.) I would hope that the many good members of our forum would support us and snitch here on sites they might find that use our images without permission or without being one of our retail outlets. It's that sort of tattle-telling that keeps our forum here strong. :D

Well, like I said, technically, they are using the pics without permission, but they are also selling our gear. If they sell enough of our gear, they can have the pics. In fact, if they sell an inordinate amount, maybe we'll always blur the faces ;) It wouldn't make sense to sue someone for selling our gear, tho. Besides, the first step would be a cease and desist letter, and anyone would be smart enough to take it down before it went to court.

rogue - I once sat in on a class being held by monk Shi Deshan in a local park and that day, there was a prison unit assigned for clean up. It was a lot of orange.

Why is that stance considered avdanced or good or special or significant. What's so special about it?

The person in orange standing (http://www.blackbeltshop.com/shaolin_style_warrior_monk_robes.htm)

If you like to were orange then either be a Shao-Lin monk or sevre a sentence in American prison?

The monks had it first.

Orange probablly affects the mood (mental state). More serine attitudes. (j/k) Pink and green temporarially blinded the prison guards. They then went to orange :-). Orange you glad they stopped wearing pink and green? :-)

gene,

someone else has probably asked this on this forum before, but why are the traditional uniforms orange?

GeneChing
10-08-2002, 05:48 PM
Actually robes come in many colors. At Shaolin Temple, you'll see the monks in orange, grey, many off color shades of beige/yellow/saffron, even the occasional white or black. I was married in the Green Dragon Zendo just north of SF, seven years ago to the day, and we wore dark blue initiate robes. When I stayed at the Tibetan Temple at Bodh Gaya where Buddha was enlightened, I wore a maroon robe. That one is still one of my favorites along with a one-of-a-kind black silk one that my Bak Sil Lum master Wing Lam gave me. When I'm at Shaolin, I almost always wear grey since that's what my monk master, Shi Decheng told me to wear as a layman disciple. But I've seen lots of disciples and even non-disciple students wearing orange.

Latley, orange has been the color of choice for the martial monks, perhaps because it is so bright. Same reason prisoners have to wear them in a way. They started out more of a dull orange, which more traditional to Chinese Buddhists, but lately I've seen some of the martial disciples wearing a ultra bright neon orange, a real retina burner.

To answer no know, the stance is very good for balance and sheer leg strength development. It is advanced because, well..try it..now hold it a while.

As for orange... the original colour was "saffron" which is a yellow/red (orange)colour when used as dye. It is very difficult to harvest (look it up) and is also very $ valuable. It has several meanings in buddhist cosmology and is worn primarily by higher order monks and priests in buddhist orders.

As for Gene, I wish you great prosperity and happiness and health, you folks at kfqg are doing great work for the Chinese martial arts and other asian cultural treasures. Keep it up and keep it coming! that sounds weird....you know what I mean:D

Err, lineage from The`.......
Well, I've seen some of there stuff, never been too impressed with a lot of it. If you want "real" Shaolin, I would recommend somewhere else. I am not a SD hater necessarily, however, I've had discussions with some of their students, it seems some can be very arogant about all things kung fu. I'll not discus my lineage, however it had been questioned by one of their students I talked to, didn't make me happy, my friend actually made the wookie comment, then that was pretty much the end of the conversation. The Shao-Lin centers tend to annoy me, however, I don't know the full story of it, but I do know a bunch. There have been several threads about this in the past. As far as my "real" Shaolin comment, I'd just have to say I'm speaking of Northern Shaolin, Bak Sil lum, or the southern animals, etc..... A friend of mine often refers people to a southern school instead of the shao lin center for that type of style if they don't like our long fist.
I agree about the book KC

Didn't expect all the anniversary well wishes. You all are too nice.:)

Here's some more robe thoughts -

In Buddhism, monk robes were originally made from clothes discarded on dead bodies. Monks would gather bits of clothing from the dead until they could assemble a patchwork quilt of sorts. This is why many traditions have long robes with a design made up of little squares. Additionally, in many Zen traditions, you must sew your own robe from scratch when you are indoctrinated as a priest as part of your initiation meditation.

In the Chinese tradition, these became rather ornate, often made of the finest silks and heavily embroidered. It's the exact opposite from the original intention really. Venerable Shi Guolin has a spectacular one - you can see it the cover story I wrote on him in AUG 2000 - http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=122 . At Shaolin, they make a big point that the red color of this part of the long robe symbolizes the blood that came from Huike's arm after he cut it off to show his dedication. That's why it's worn off the shoulder as such, but this style is pretty common for all Buddhist monks.

The pictures you post links to don't show up. They automatically link to porn pages. THAT's what shows up on everyone's computer.

There's nothing wrong with the girl in the pic above, but the pictures you post are from porn sites, and they automatically forward people to those sites.

That's what everyone is angry about.
