Not to diminish Raymond Carver's achievements, but is he really as important to American short stories as Miller is to Batman? Mostly, I mean the bar set for Batman was pretty low, and American short stories already had Poe, Twain, O'Conner, Brautigan, Cheever, etc.

MasterKiller
06-27-2003, 01:37 PM
Most critics and writers will easily agree that Carver is the best short-story writer of the 20th Century. I would add Post WW-I to that, because really, literature changed dramatically after that anyway, but I'm comfortable enough with Carver's work to say 20th Century myself.

Most people get caught up in his minimalism, and either love it or hate it. But, really, what he's writing about is how wounded people relate to one another, which is something everyone should be able to relate to.

Cheever is good, but a bit full of himself at times. And while I like O'conner, there is only so many times I can stand being hit on the head with a Bible.

norther practitioner
06-27-2003, 01:43 PM
And while I like O'conner, there is only so many times I can stand being hit on the head with a Bible.

I think I've read maybe 100 words of O'Conners.. then I came to that conclusion.. great writer however.

Chang Style Novice
06-27-2003, 02:06 PM
Like I say - not to diminish Carver's achievements. But as I understand it, the short story itself is more or less a home grown american artform that later caught on elsewhere. He definitely brought something new and important to it, and did so with amazing craft and artistry (not the same thing, btw.) However, there was already very high quality work being done in short stroies before he arrived*. I don't know if one can say the same of Miller and Batman. Well, maybe a few isolated cases of real art, but most Batman stories before tDKR (and most after, too) are just greasy kidstuff.

That's why when I want to defend comics as literature (or art, or most likely of all some hybrid of the two) I don't go to the superheroes - I go to Berlin, Maus, American Splendor, etc.

* would you consider Faulkner and Hemingway contemporary to Carver? I think a lot of folks would choose them for the #1 spot. Although they're novels are better known than their short works, mostly.

rubthebuddha

design -- alpha and omega are the first and last letters in the greek alphabet. the statement is blasphemously taken from a quote of God, who said "i am the alpha and omega, the beginning and end."

basically, i meant that everything starts, and ends, with me getting my buddhas rubbed.

now for those new to this sandbox or those who weren't paying attention a while back, i have two main buddhas -- a shaved head and a strong tummy, respectively called north and south. a deep-south buddha also exists, but that's not meant for public display or demonstration. ;)

Yes, but Johnny Cash burned down a national park while tripping on mescaline. That's got to count for something.

Anyway...

So today, I got up at 8, went to Prestwick Airport, which IS the airport in GTA:Vice City. While flying to Stanstead, I looked out and saw a crop formation: 5 pointed star inside a pentagon. This is just after the pilot's name is announced as "Dragon Ostovich", causing me to think of "Illuminatus!", which I'd just reread.

So I go from Stanstead to Heathrow, get chosen for a random security check where they fondle my luggage, spend another 7 hours in the air, and then walk past an airport security guard with stigmata on my way out of the Philly airport.

Ah, it's just a pretty typical record store job. Steer the customers to the high-markup stuff, let 'em know what great taste they've got, file the CDs, inventory the CDs, keep an eye on what's going out of stock and let the manager know. But it's at a (BIG!) record store and you get an employee discount and a crack at promos.

Which version of Death of a Salesman were you assigned, Phil? I like the Dustin Hoffman one a lot, myself, although there's plenty good to be said about Lee J Cobb, too.

I alwasy thought potstickers were a sort of general term for any kind of fried dumpling. After all, it is an english word - can that describe the process of making gyoza too?

I remember having a special banquent in Xian that was just potstickers - or dumplings rather - something like two dozen plus different varieties.

Dunno about that. But Homer definitely said, "Who's that on the what now?" in one episode because it lives on in infamy with myself and some friends. I'm just not a geeky as you guys so I can't recall the exact episode and situation. ;)

Would food be more interesting if it came in little multi-coloured blocks of dough like Kirk used to eat in Star Trek?

gee you guys, listen:

- on first instance
if i wanted a wh0re id get one (as a mather of fact, many times paid sex will cost less than free sex)
paying for sex would feel like humiliation for me

- on second instance
i dont want **** holes, i want a full woman, know what im saying?
and im not talking about the body

my complains are:

i am incapable of getting a woman either for intercourse or to be a girlfriend. ive seen guys who are complete retards (almost literaly) doing so, and i cant. its enough to define me as a cripple, and i do scientificly define me as a social cripple.

now, there is no information or tips you can give i havent heard or calculated by myself. Cos all the time you were living your normal life taking care of whatever bussiness, i was watching, and i seen a lot of everything, and i know how it works, ive figured much out, im not stupid.
mind you, i have calculated solutions, but becouse i know it, does it mean i can do it?

if you know my social patterns and my basic psyche (observative/social passive/seldom comunitavite/laconic/defensive/introvert/sarcastic), is it possible for me to assume a social behaviour that would lead to such results?

it is not, it implies on modification of that basic psyche and most of my social patterns. do you think thats something performable? its like changing into someone else or acting, but i dont act, i dislike acting and im lousy at it in all levels.

you can say: "but i know this guy, that has those same characteristics... he gets some, not much, but he does"
i dont, i havent. when i say cripple, i really mean cripple, tragicly cripple.

why do i post about it?
my head cant take it, it HAS to come out somewhere, and its not gona be from my mouth, so its from my fingers - ever wonder why i go crazy if i cant get online for more than a couple of days?

i call this my escape valve, the internet, as twisted as you might think it is. ive tried to shut it, left the forums, left almost everything, but had to come back.
-----------

thats just an overview of the situation, if i got into details, this thing would be 10 pages, believe me

np, i dont think 10$ will do it, but for 5$ i can change those blue lyrics to any other color you like, for real

MasterKiller, very funny, but i wont pick randomly and fitness is not the issue

You think so? You got a woman? ;)

Seriously, I used to go out on the hunt all the time and try to pick up chicks. I was hopeless at it. Then I stopped bothering. I would go out and just hang with friends and chat to people that I met. Whenever I met a girl I wouldn't think about picking her up, I'd just chat. I got a lot more girls that way.

One time I went out and had no intention of doing anything other than having a couple of beers and playing some pool. I joined a pool table and there was this cute chick there playing anda couple of guys. I chatted with the guys, I chatted with her. I thought she was with one of the guys so I never entertained the idea of picking her up. As we all left she asked for my number. I'm married to her now!

Take from it what you will, but I maintain that all the time I went out to deliberately score I hardly ever did. Chicks can spot a try-hard from 50 paces.

Serpent

LOL. :)

Maybe you're just pig ugly?

I'm only joking - I seen your picture and you're not ugly.

I guess there's a balance in there somewhere. You have to go to places where there are women for you not to try to pick up! ;) I ended up on the other side of the planet before I found my true love.

Chang Style Novice
07-17-2003, 08:39 PM
No, my problem is that I'm recovering from being painfully shy and I am painfully broke. If I'm reading Xeb right, he is painfully awkward around women. This is, of course, a major turn off.

Xeb, my advice is close to Serps, but not exactly the same.

First - if you've got money, show it. Prosperity is erotic. It doesn't make women wh0res to say this is true - who wants to attach themselves to someone they'll have to drag around like an anchor? Be as generous as you can. It's good to do anyway, and chixdigit.

Second - (And this is pretty much the same as what Serp said) go out with friends and be with women and don't feel like you gotta boink 'em or evenlike you gotta try. Get comfortable with the idea of being with them and around them no matter what the circumstances. When you're at ease, they'll be at ease, and that's when the good stuff happens.

Third - go easy on the hyper macho stuff like MA and metal music and weapons and armor. Chixdontdigit like guys do (mostly) and there's inevitably a ****erotic subtext to stuff that only guys like and gals don't. Include them, don't exclude them.

Serpent

Good advice, Chang.

Xebs, don't give up the metal though. Just don't be too hardcore all the time! ;)

Anyway, who wants a spankin'? It's been a while?

Chang Style Novice

"Xebs, don't give up the metal though. Just don't be too hardcore all the time! "

Oh, absolutely. It's a matter of there being a time and a place for everything. For example, when you take a girl to a movie, don't insist that it be some gun-battle/punch-out/car-chase/exploding building picture. Go see that with your mates. Take your girl to a romantic comedy or a melodramatic weeper. Some of them really are okay.

Serpent
07-17-2003, 09:24 PM
Also, if you know of a good action flick that's also a bit cerebral, take her to that and then tell her that next time you'll go see something at the Arthouse. That way she gets to see that you like the action, but also have a brain, and you score a second date! ;)

OK, now lets have some suggesitons for cerebral/intelligent/romantic action flicks... I'm drawing a blank, rendering my advice useless!

Oooh! I got one! Crouching Tigerm Hidden Dragon! More than a kung fu flick. :)
