Are you likely to go there? A petroleum consulting firm could have some morally ambiguous work.

Mind you, what do you do now? If you work for Nike or Disney, for example, then going to a petroleum firm would be like retreating to a Buddhist monastery.

I'm working in research right now. When I graduate, another student will get my job and I won't be able to call myself a mathematician anymore.:(

This is about getting me when I get my math degree.

I've been giving serious consideration to doing teach for america for a year. Being a tech at a consulting firm would be mad money. Other than that, I hear a lot of software companies prefer to hire mathematicians and teach them to program.

XEBS, come here and sit on my lap. Now, this will hurt me more than it hurts you....

No, the guy who told me that does tend to hire mathematicians. He asked me some of the interview questions he asks and he's all about finding out how people think before he hires them. He doesn't care what they know. He figures he can teach them that, as long as they can think.

This is my favorite one:

"There is a hill, 2 miles to the top, 2 miles to the bottom. Your car goes a maximum speed of 60 mph. How do you get to the other side in 2 minutes."

I thought he messed up the question so I said, "Do I have some sort of anti-matter ray gun?"

He said, "That is the correct answer. I'm just looking for the person who doesn't freak out and gives a smart alecky answer."

Actually I have. Interesting stuff. The guy is a bit too enthusiastic for me; far too many exclamation marks and such, and some of the eastern philosohy is kinda forced in to fit, but it's certainly interesting reading.

Do you mean atop, as in on top, or something else? You lost me there. What's a switch re: Xebby? Suddenly I'm lost in a euphoria of erotic euphemism and fun.

For what it's worth, on top, underneath, sideways, sandwiched, I'm up for all of it.

Venus cannot be seen late at night. This is because its orbit is closer to the sun than the Earth's, and hence it never wanders more than a short distance from the sun. During the day, of course, it is outshined by the light of the sun. It is only in the short time before sunrise and after sunset that Venus is both above the horizon and not overpowered by the sun, and this is why Venus is sometimes called 'the morning star' or 'the evening star.' Except that it's not a star, so that's still not really accurate.

Mars, due to it's outer orbit relative to the Earth may be seen at all times of the night. Also, we may see all of Mars' phases, but only a few of Venus'.

Copernicus kicked ass!

And Mercury's perihelion is due to the fact that it's in the steep part of the gravity well. If you calculate the rotation of our galaxy and the mass distribution, it doesn't add up. Unless there's a bunch of matter out there that we can't see. We call it dark matter. We don't know what it is. In the beginning of the universe, the expansion was faster than the speed of light. It's callrd cosmic inflation. Matter and anti-matter briefly come into existence and then extinguish each other. It happens constantly and quickly. During cosmic inflation, they were pulled apart before they could collide and extinguish each other. That's where all the matter in the universe comes from. We don't know where the anti-matter is. Is it this mysterious dark matter?

I used to live in Singapore and return to the States for summers. Seven years of this. People complain about jet lag in four/five hour time differences and I want to smack them. Try staying awake for 28 hours just to get close to being on the right schedule.

Well, think about this, then. We don't really know for sure that the universe is three dimensional space. It might be four dimensional. We know that it is three dimensional locally. That's all. But local don't mean nothing.

To understand this idea, think about this. Nobody tells you this until you're in high level mathematics. A straight line is actually a circle. It's a circle with an infinite radius. You are only looking at an infinitessimal part of it and, in that tiny part, it's straight.

Or, you know how people thought the world was flat? That's because, locally, the world IS flat. You have to look way out to the horizon in an open, open plain to see a curve. You have to look at the phases of the moon to really see the roundness.

So, in our little section of the universe, space seems to have three dimensions. But there might be a fourth dimension.

Wanna see some pictures that represent functions in frational dimensions. Not one or two or three dimensions but one fourth of a dimension or one eigth of a dimension?

These are awesome.

euler,

understand that most terms for the meatpipe are terms of pride and power. we like to name things so they sound impressive. mansaber, pocketrocket, etc. -- stuff like that is all meant to make a lasting impression, even if the actual item can't.

however, many of the terms for women's naughty bits are terms of either cuteness or something a bit more on the icky side, but most don't inspire all that well.

consider it another mysoginistic part of this world. maybe women need tougher-sounding nicknames for their parts. maybe that'd help get the stubborn mule of equality moving quicker.

Oh, okay. Well, I can explain this. Most guys like to think of their stuff as impressive and substantial and they get put off if you use terms that contradict this idea. "If you please, it's not a pee-pee, it's a c*ck."

For women, it's delicate and lovely. We like to think of it as delicate and lovely. I get put off when people use terms that contradict that idea. "If you please, they aren't beef curtains, it's a punani."

Now, you don't have to have the same limits as me. You don't have to have the same tastes or sensibilities. That's why I let you know that I didn't want you to call it that instead of getting angry with you when you did. You can call it whatever you want if you think I'm being uptight.

But, please, as your freind, don't. Let me keep living in my little world where it's a delicate little flower. What's it to ya?

good call. but i don't think there's common ground in being truly masculine or feminine. men like impressive names to make their members sound important. car and machine innuendo abound because that's what impresses men.

however, a great deal men couldn't care less about flora (delicate flower). it's either a garnish for their steak or something to buy when they've ****ed up and ****ed off their old lady -- the ol' dozen roses and "i'm sorry" act.

i'm not saying the stereotype is right, but i don't buy the feminine argument as absolute -- i like the fact that my girlfriend is taller than me and can rassle. she's not a fan of the absolute, either, and doesn't buy the wholly masculine act, either. she about wets herself with glee every time i send flowers, because they're thought out well and unique to a traditional milestone or to an occasion in her life. speaking of which, 10 days and it'll be a year for us. :D

Oh, I thought you were being difficult with me. Tender hot and juicy is just fine. Nothing wrong with that, it doesn't really contradict delicate and lovely. Are you saying that the word 'beef' implies tender, hot and juicy? Those are not really the ideas that word conveys. Think of what it means to beef something up or to call something beefy.

Or, if you are asking, 'well, what about tender, hot and juicy?' Sure, absolutely, go for it. That doesn't contradict delicate and lovely. It fits. It's really good in its own right. On the other hand, you have to completely get rid of 'delicate and lovely' to accomodate 'beef curtains'. That's all I'm saying, really. I don't expect you to refer to it as something specifically delicate and lovely. Just use terms that let me keep that in the equation.

On a complete tangent, if nothing else in the hope that this thread doesn't get deleted, I have a question.

The other day I came across this dude in a market. He was selling various things preserved in clear resin, mostly insects and general bugarama. His particular specialty was redback spiders. The redback is the most (second most?) deadly spider known to man, resident of Australia. There haven't been any deaths here from them since the 50's, but they're still nasty buggers.

Anyway, I was rather perturbed at the whole trapping of life in resin idea and what it did for the perception of nature in general. He maintained that he did it mainly for schools and museums, etc. in the name of science. The commercial side just helped him to keep his business running. He also said that they actually breed redbacks themselves, specifically for the purpose of resin encasement. I couldn't decide whether I found this more or less disturbing!

Your thoughts?

joedoe
12-09-2002, 05:41 PM
We breed animals for food. Not much difference really.

Serpent
12-09-2002, 05:58 PM
Enormous difference. We breed for food in order to survive. We are an omniverous race and need meat as well vegies (watch all the vegetarians jump all over that one!)

The spiders in resin thing is purely for aesthetics. It's like wearing fur. The dude reckoned that no matter how many pictures you saw, people wanted to see the real thing. His way means they can do that without disrupting the creatures natural environment. Sounds like rationalisation to me.

Chang Style Novice
12-09-2002, 06:54 PM
I come at the issue from a different angle. Basically, I think the more complex your neurology is, the more deserving of compassion you are. So, I don't really worry about buggy cruelty. I avoid mammal meat, but am not so worried about birds. Fish still less. Invertebrates still less. Plants least of all.

I'm more worried about these nasty spidies getting out and going all kudzu/starling/northern snakehead on us. Unless his spider farm is in australia, in which case I'm worried most about his instinct for self-preservation.

and allow me to commend you on the use of the word "bugarama" rather than "buggery.";)

Serpent
12-09-2002, 07:32 PM
CSN. Thank you. I actually went back and changed it from buggery to buggarama, as I knew where it would lead otherwise. Of course, you drawing attention to it that way may have nullified all my forethought!

As for your take on the whole bug thing, you seem to make a value judgment based on what little we know of a nervous system. You don't consider all life sacred then?

Obviously. I'm setting up a trap for you, so I may as well come straight out with it.

Octopus. Simple nervous system. Cephalopod life form. Therefore fairly low on your level of respect, however, scientific study has proven that Octopii have an intelligence level similar to that of the average dog.

What do you think of that, value judgment man?

Of course I consider all life sacred. But a guy's gotta eat.

Heck, Catholics consider Jesus not only sacred but God Himself, and don't seem to mind chowing down on his meat and guzzling his blood.

Or put another way, I'm one of them squishy western Scientific Taoists, and all life is one and the same and the Lion King and all that sh!t. So, the best we can do is to accept and embrace our own suffering and endeavor not to cause to much in others (oops! I let a little bit of squishy western Buddhism in there.) My own prejudices place the smarter critters above the dumber ones.

As for octopi, I've heard some folks say that they're smart, but if memory serves, the best they've got to go on is they can open jars. I think that's more a function of their anatomy than their brains problem solving capabilities, and they're too delicious for me to go off and try to find out if I'm wrong. Because I'm a hypocrite, and agree with the poet Ikkyu. (Whom you may remember me quoting before)

A Meal of Fresh Octopus

A lot of arms, just like Kannon the Goddess;
Sacrificed for me, garnished with citron, I revere it so!
The taste of the sea, just divine!
Sorry Buddha, this is another precept I cannot keep.

Mmmm...octopus!

Who me? It's a bit different. In the old days they were hunted, but this is usually controlled now by conservation laws. Specimens that have died naturally are a different kettle of fish.

However, besides all that, this guy mass produces these spiders for a commercial market, so again, the comparison is flawed.

Aha. So you're a hypocrite and you choose to live in ignorance. So there's really no point in me discussing this with you!

I, too, love octopus and struggle with the concept. Also with pork. Mmmmmmbacon... but pigs are really quite intelligent beings.

The difference between you and me, Chang, is that I worry about these things and you choose not to. We're not so different other than that.

A friend of mine once said, when we were discussing the same thing, "Well, the pig may be an intelligent creature, but it ain't bright enough to figure out a way to stop us from killing and eating it. So what are you worried about."

It may not surprise you to know that this friend is American and a great proponent of Dubya. We have very heated exchanges.

Chang Style Novice
12-09-2002, 08:34 PM
Well, what's your worry going to get you? You still have to eat. You can go veggie, but we have no way of knowing for certain that plants don't have some kind of inconcievable (to our frail animal consciousnesses) intellect and psychic civilization. So that's no guarantee that you're not a contemptible murderer either.

The best evidence of my senses tells me that we are in and of this world, and no matter what we do will never escape it, not even in death. We should, of course, try to preserve and improve the world as best we can and I do that (sometimes) but we can't know all the consequences of our actions, or even or our inaction. Some things are fundamentally unknowable, and one of those is the future. Since morality and ethics are bound inextricably with the concepts of cause and effect, and since Shroedinger Heisenberg and the rest of those guys have shown that effects cannot be perfectly correlated with cause, we are left with only our socialization and instincts to guide us about what is right. But as long ago as Plato it was known that our senses can be fooled and that the world we see (and act upon) cannot be known to any conclusive degree.

And so I leave the bacon alone, and have octopus when I can afford it, because that's my best guess. And it's not much better or worse than yours, because despite your slander about hypocrisy and ignorance we're in the same cave staring at flickering shadowplays.

Uh, doing kungfu and ordering supplies from www.martialartsmart.com:D

Very good. I like the way you brought in the cave/shadow thing to remind us that these ideas are certainly not new!

However, back to the original idea, do you think mass producing life for aesthetic commercial gain (i.e. the redback in resin dude) fits in any way within the confines of morality we've outlined between us? And, let's be honest, we both have a pretty loose moral standing on this already.

I'll be interested to see what eulerfan has to say on this, assuming all the talk of pork flaps hasn't scared her off.

My view is that dead is dead. Whether you mass produce a creature to eat it, put it in resin, or to just kill it for the hell of it the simple fact is that they are dead.

My personal view is that if it is OK to raise and kill animals for food then it is OK raising and killing them for any other purpose. Killing wild animals for frivolous reasons is bad, especially if they are endangered.

So no, I don't have a problem with someone raising spiders so they can be killed and encased in resin. To me there is no difference between that and raising beef cattle, and since I love my steak I have no objection to that :).

CSN, it's not you. That's my point. Don't worry about it. I need about 40 cc's of lithium or something. The other two things are self-explanatory but the personal relationship thing......remember I told you about that guy who dangerous liasons calibre mind fu(k on me? He showed up in my group of friends again. I still don't understand why he did what he did and now I don't know if I'll have to see him on a regular basis again.

I don't know. Maybe all that time he thought I was just being coy and it was only when I finally gave in that he realized that I was seriously falling in love with him. That I was telling the truth about how being with him would kill me. Maybe that's why he turned me down after six months of heavy pursuit. It makes sense but it's too 'romance novel' to actually believe.

That's what I have in my head along with finals and hormones. And what the hell I am going to do about his sudden decision to return to my life.

So, being upset about beef curtains was pressure release.

It wasn't real. Honestly.

Don't leave eulerfan or I can't justify sending you the shirt.

The transition from sexual slang to cannibalism was very amusing. This thread has got to be the most dynamic on the forum. Reminds me of the story of the little disciple who fell into the wok at Shaolin Temple and got eaten. They still point to the wok and to a pagoda that allegedly memorializes the boy. Somehow, I think they'd notice the body of a boy in a wok. It's a big wok, but come on, a dead boy would stick out in my bowl of rice.
