What is better for chi kung?
1) Tongue on the roof of mouth breath in through the nose and out the mouth or out the nose?

can someone give me the differences in health benifits and chi cultivation?:)

Also does it matter which one you practise for an internal set?

The reason im asking is because i read a book on taiji ruler and the way they breath is in the nose out the mouth tongue touching the palate of course.

I was taught never to open the mouth, do any of you open the mouth?

maybe its to detoxify by breathing out?

Usually when we do soft qigong and zhan zhuang etc. the tongue is on the roof of the mouth and the breathing is relaxed and in as well as out thru the nose...

but for hard qigong we breath in thru the mouth and out the nose....

i've seen some other schools breath in the nose and out the mouth as well so i guess it depends on the skill :)

sorry i couldn't help much - but just wanted to say there must be a reason for things... if it's from a book then u woulda thought they had explained it... :confused:

Well being an internal thread with so many internal stylist not one answer!!:(

The only thing about having the mouth open practising is it may become a habit and in a situation will get your jaw broken! thanks for your reply bro, much appreciated...:)

well when we open the mouth we use it to suck/swallow air :) that's part of the training lol.. no other time :)

good point though!

hehehe yau kung mun is a pure internal system but ive never been taught to open the mouth in chi kung so i was interested in what its used for and the health benifits of it!:)

everyone is to busy on other threads like git chi girlz and crap like that..oh well its me and u bro!!:)

it's used as part of our hard qigong training, literally like you're eating air. It helps to gather a lot of air to the lungs as well as with developing force... i found the exercises help me with my posture as well...

interesting... slightly o/t but do you class the YKM seperate form the pak mei you do? :confused:

What do you mean by 'better?' Both methods do 'the job' but I think what's been said regarding hard (mouth) vs. soft (nose) makes sense.

If by 'better' u mean more controlled more strengthened u might want to investigat the breath methods of yoga. there is 1 where they concentrate breath in thru one nostril n out threu the other (then reverse that when you get it down). Very hard to do, but is possible and helps for mindfulness/health in a strange way. I don't know if that would be good for ma's tho. (???) Maybe other ones that they have.

Which direction do you breathe normally? up front or up the back? are u doing hard or soft qiqong?
