Well an action movie definitely.

I've already had 3 duel to the death matches in my back yard next to the 35th chamber that I built (there wasn't rood for the 36th and all the others) and I haven't even left the house yet.:D

I still have to battle my way through the supermarket filled with with challengers and go through a cool fight scene at the mall to impress the chics Jackie Chan style. Oh and don't get me started at the about the Chinese restaurant I 'm going to.

Maybe it's just me, but there seems to be a lot of hilarious macho posturing around here that's so over the top it would make Samuel Jackson embarassed. I find it a lot more bothersome than the offtopic natter and the silly jokes.

I'm not going to name names here (I've done so plenty elsewhere) but how can anyone really believe that rolling or sparring with someone from another school is a life-or-death struggle? How can anyone really believe that you must live by the code of the warrior or die like a lowly worm? How can anyone really believe that one's martial arts practice is the only thing that matters?

Ok to answer your questions

1)I dont' believe it's alife or death struggle but I believe to an extent you need to have that type of mentality. To me sparring is a game where you try to see how you can use your techniques. It's really fun.

2)Well I try to live by a "code" ,or martial morality, but mainly my Christianity decides on how I live that code. The reason why I follow it is because I chose to and it appeals to me. I don't follow it like how most people view it . This isn't a shaw brothers movie but some people treat it that way. More often that not some people's code is nothing more than a combination of hippy budhism, shaw borthers flicks,Japanese bushido, and karate kids movies.

For example. Most of you might remember that little stinch I had with my ex-friend. When we sparred and put him in an arm bar he told me it wasn't honorable and that my style wasn't honorable. What the heck?  His view of "honor" was very distorted due to the large amounts of anime that he has seen. Honor ,for me, is doing the right thing. When you defend your families life that is honorable, when mother Teresa went through out al of her life living with poor poeple and helping them that is honorable etc.. For him honor was a ritual that you did to impress others to make them respect you. Anime is cool but man some people take it too far.

3)Martial practise isn't the only thing in mylife. As you can already tell I'm very much a loyal catholic (almost fanatic) and hold God above anything else even beyond my kung fu. Kung fu isn't my life but it's a big part of it. I know that there are other big things that are a major part of my life like family, work, relationships etc.. I see my role in the martial arts as a gift from God and it has to become an enlightening experience for me. Some people choose other hobbies like moutnain biking, art, basketball, singing. This is how I relax and express myself.

Well, think about how easy that must be. To just pick something and devote yourself to that one thing, convince yourself that it's the most important thing in the world. You don't really have to worry about anything else. You can judge yourself on nothing but how well you do at that one thing.

You don't have to worry about what it really means to be a good person. You don't have to seek real truth or try to understand the world you're living in.

Think of how stress free such an existance would be?

I'm a little bit envious of these people, I don't mind telling you.

Eulerfan - Perhaps they have chosen this with their pre-reflective conciousness as their fundamental project of being. However, it may be a simple instance of inauthenticity. Considering that this is not a true project for most of these people, in fact they will avoid real tests of their martial skill. They deny their facticity - that they exist in the world.

I started MA because of buddhism. I watch Shaw Bros flicks only now, for the hell of it. All is not lost, though. I'm going to tell you what eulerfan means and you are going to love this.

I am a fan of a mathematician named Leonhard Euler. What he did borders on the mystical.

He discovered a number, referred to as 'e'. It is trascendental, like pi. It never ends. 2.718281828459045235360287471352662497757247093699 95957496696762772407663035354759457138217852516642 74274663919320030599218174135966290435729003342952 60595630738132328627943490763233829880753195251019 011573834187930702154089149934884167509........... ...........

This number, raised to the power x, equals its own derivative and its own integral. That means that e^x is always equal to its own rate of change. Now, take e, this transcendental number, raise it to the poxer of pi, another transcendental number, multiplied by i, the square root of -1, this is an imaginary number that doesn't exist, and you have -1. Euler showed that.

This is just the tip of the iceberg that is his life's work. He was the most prolific mathematician of his time.

Now I'm nonplussed.

Say you were a huge Bruce Lee fan. Somebody asked you about it and you started praising him. Then somebody else asked, "Was he a better athlete than Mikhail Baryshnikov? Cuz that guy's an amazing athlete."

You'd say, "Well, I'm not sure. They didn't really do the same thing. I like MAs so I can appreciate Bruce Lee better."

I can tell you that I'M not smarter than einstein. To prove it, I have no idea what you mean by the re-discovering infinity question.

Okay. Much better. I at least understand the concept of 'raising something to the power of' some number. But I am ignorant enough of higher math that you could have given me some bogus definition of a poxer and I'd have swallered it hook line and sinker.

Um...I'm pretty tough on crossword puzzles, though.:D

Uh ...e is cool and everything. What is it, [1 + (1/x)] to the power of x as x goes to infinity, or something? I can't quite remember. But I was slightly dissapointed by the proof that E to the I-pi +1 = 0. That seemed so mysterious to me in high school when my teacher, a PHD in physics mentioned it to us. But, considering that the power of anything to an imaginary power is defined in terms of PI and radians, that proof is somewhat circular, as I recall. Not to diss Euler. I think he was the author of several theoroms we studied in Differential Geometry, a 400-level course I got an "A-" in my senior year. However, I can only lament that I gained that grade and most of my other, more average grades through lots of cramming in the last week or two leading up to the test. I was able to score decent marks, but the information was not retained for very long.

Gauss may have been slighter sweeter, but Euler was right up there.

Just ribbing you, and keep at it! What do you plan to do with your degree? I miss the academic life - didn't appreciate it enough while I was there. Really, it was some of the other students, mostly but not entirely other majors, clueless to the world, that annoyed me, as well as the overall society. I missed out on some great courses that I could have put more energy into. They shouldn't send you to college right after high school.

Braden
10-18-2002, 02:48 PM
Transcendental? Heh... never heard them called that.

I think of them as 'translation factors'; for example, between our language and the language of change, for e. More or less poetic than 'transcendental'?

Chang Style Novice
10-18-2002, 02:51 PM
Interesting quibble, Braden. I understood "trancendental numbers" well enough from context, but I thought fractions that trailed on and on without ever repeating were just irregular, not trancendental.

eulerfan
10-18-2002, 06:00 PM
fa_jing

You're exactly right. That's what it is. That's the limit.

The proof I've seen wasn't circular.

The taylor series expansion of e is the summation n = 0 to infinity, x^n/n! . That's how I've seen the proof of euler's equation done. With the taylor series expansions for e^ix, cos(x) and isin (x).

You find that
e^(ix) = cos(x) + i sin(x)

Plug in pi for x, i sin(x) disappears and you have cos (pi) which is, of course, -1.

It's nice.

Anyhoo, it looks like I might end up in petrolium consulting. What was your course of study?

And if the burner manifold is 33", and the base plate is 32" (on the 36" unit), you won't have room for the ignition tube, so you'd better make the lower pan 32 & 3/16" regaurdless of what the specs or blueprints say.

Okay, I get it. To be fair, I was answering a question, though. I guess I responded at too much length and depth because I was really passionate about it. That happens, right?

I didn't think I was talking that far over people's heads. What I chose to demonstrate the beauty of the man really only required an understanding of powers, derivatives and integrals. You really only need to have taken calculus in high school to understand those.

I think you could cut me a little slack. Give me a smidge of elbow room.

:) Yes, right the beauty of the proof is in the Taylor expansions, thanks for reminding me. Once you have the e^(ix) = cos(x) + i sin(x), the rest follows more simply. Math is so amazing, I was already thinking of getting back into it a little, but your post has really increased that urge. I was a Math and Physics major, now I am a computer professional 6 years out of school. What I do now is not so inspiring, but does pay the bills for my family and is moderately stimulating, as well as not being a difficult job most of the time. Eventually I would like to do computer work that supported scientific research, but even if that does not come to pass, I will look back into what I studied, especially the elegant math-based stuff, for pure enjoyment. There's a couple of my old textbooks that I'd like to get a hold of.

I know what you're talking about.

I have a friend who got his degree in physics. He's in petroleum consulting and that's why I will probably end up in that field. It really does come down to who you know. He's always offering to help with problems and projects. Gets an almost erotic excitement from it. I love it because he's much smarter than me so it's more challenging and I have someone to lean on if I get lost. But it's also kind of scary because it makes me realize what road I'm about to take. I'm going to start really missing theory, too. Blech.

How about physics formula postings? I could post some formulas about spring problems where, in this simple harmonic, back and forth motion, you intorduce a KY factor. ;)

Really. The other physics and math people can back me up on this. With simple harmonic motion, you use KY.

There is no formula for that. Only more attentive preparation is required. :)

I thought KY was for sex.

Couldn't hurt. I could always cut and past the some 30,000 + lines of ASP code for one report (of many, many reports) that is used.

Eulerfan, we do not compute. You are quite safe.

Personally, I've found that simple harmonic motion doesn't require KY.

On the other hand, wild animal syncopated thrusting action usually benefits from a little of that stuff...
