Both of these popular systems seem to be very diverse (not known only for a few techniques). What are the real differences (if any) in these two? Does one have any advantage over the other in any way?

The Northern Shaolin (Henan) system is broadly recognized as Long Fist (Changquan). The name describes its long-rage attacks which are the fundamental characteristics of the Northern Shaolin system.

Northern Shaolin is Chang chuan, however, not all chang chuan is shaolin.

After a bit more research, I realize how vague/confusing this question is. A better way to phrase this is to say
What is the difference between Long Fist and the curriculum in this link. I included the link because I can't classify it as a single style for you.

Errr....not shaolin-do again. Do a search on these forums or over on www.russbo.com for shaolin do. There is a fairly obvious difference in forms.

norther practitioner,
Thanks for the link. Those guys may even rival the Wing Chun guys for their squabbling over who has the "real" art. The thread on the evolution of the Kung Fu-Do arts was interesting too.
