Have any of you wondered what the sayings (in Chinese) on the front side of KQ mean in English? Come on Gene, tell us! I suggest all future issues have an English translation in the Editors column or elsewhere and to have all previous ones posted in the e zine.

It can be interpreted in many ways:
"Magazine for tai chi hippies"
"A good way to get out of training for a few hours"
"A few articles, a lot of advertising"
:D :D :D
BTW Gene, just kidding :)

The first one is easy. It was our shaolin special and we translated it on the back. It was a couplet from Shaolin Temple.
"Shaolin Martial Arts Fascinates the Entire Earth, Songshan Chan Essence Benefits teh Whole World."

Not so hasty GHD, we need a man with a slow hand. One issue at a time. Our Mar/Apr 2002 was featured Hung Gar master Lam Chun Fai so we went with a traditional Hung couplet:
fan qing fu ming,
ming jie gan qi
(oppose qing, revive ming
raise your staff (take weapons) fight for righteuosness)

Actually we are discontinuing it for next year (2003.) While a lot of people liked it, not enough did to continue it, at least for now. You have to keep in mind that was have a newsstand distribution that accounts for a lot of our sales, and - beleive it or not - most people can't even pronounce 'qigong.' I'd say over 90% of our readers can't even pronounce our title  so the chinese characters weren't helping.

Yeah...but they look good Gene! Really add to the cover.
Liked the one you just gave us...so when do we get the rest?
Slow hand...I think I heard that in a song somewhere!

Alright I'll give you another one, GHD but obviously you're the only one into it, which is why we will be discontinuing the ideograms in 2003.
The next issue featured Gao Xian of Crouching Tiger. http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=233
The couplet was supplied by master Gao himself.
wu shu da shi gao xian, wo hu chan long mei ming chuan
Martial arts grand master Gao Xian, his name is famous from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I thought they where a great design element for a time... But alos a bit of a pain...
we'll all have to see how the 2003 mag covers look with out 'em...

This was our Outlaws of the Marsh issue - this is a classic martial arts legend/novel, and the region where it happened is still renown for many great masters. So our couplet relfected that -
liang shan dou hao han, shi hu zhen ying shueng
liang mountain is filled with noble people, outlaws of the marsh has many real heroes

Are you all still interested in this? You see now why we are discontinuing it? Seemed like a good idea, but few CMA really take the time to learn the Chinese. It's a shame really.

Hey, i took a wild guess at the lam chun fai cover and got it right!
it was the characters for Ching and Ming that gave it away. :D
not the lift up your weapons and go kick some butt part though :(

5 down, 2 to go.
Sep Oct 2002 was our Taoist special
http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=235
We pulled this out of a Wudang book. It's kind of hard to translate, but one of our local masters liked it so much, he immediately appropriated it for himself (typical, we're the source - always - and don't you forget it! ;) )
