Hi, can anyone guide me to books, articles about HOJOJITSU, the art of restraining prisoners with ropes, cords? Thanks. Tom F.

Hojojutsu is stylistic - schools had unique ties - although it is a rare art today. Don Angier of the Yanagi-ryu has some aclaimed tapes on hojojutsu - check www.bugei.com (http://www.bugei.com) for the set of two on the Yanagi-ryu method.

Hojutsu is mostly used by S & M people these days. Many rope tying methods had no knots in them, since knots would be considered an insult to the noble guy being hog tied. Many families had their own special knots which they would loosen just enough before transferring a prisoner that noone could figure out the pattern.

Be warned. Look this subject up and you will come by some freaks (which could be bad or good, depending on your taste).

shaolinboxer - good points. My teacher says the reason 'quick ties' involve no knots is that traditionally, the person arrested would not have been formally charged yet, and tying a falsely-arrested prisoner could result in charges to the person tying. The full tyes involve lots of knots though.

We do the tie you mention - okuri-nawa - we say it's so when the prisoner is transferred to the custody of another feudal state, the people on the other side couldn't steal their technique.
