i mean really ... what the hell is the point? why is there a sport where you intentionally get inhumanly obese? i guess if it were designed to give people who were already fatasses something active to do it wouldn't be that bad, but they will only want to put on more weight not lose it. only the japanese ....

"what the hell is the point?"

answer 1: To push the other guy out of the ring or make him fall down.

answer 2: To gain vast wealth and adulation.

answer 3: Um...that's all I got.

they're actually pretty physically fit - apart from their massive size. i've seen a sumo wrestler do a full split to take a guy down

Have to agree with TJD.

Ever seen the Wifes of those Sumo-Wrestlers.

Never mind that the successful rikishi are looked after for the rest of their lifes with no worries about money, etc.

An average workout for these guys would put your scrawny ass in the hospital (as could the most casual swat from one of these athletes, btw)

They have money coming out the ears and the most beautiful women in the world on the arm.

Kinjit.

What makes them soo much weirder??

They are a difrent culture that naturally does things different than your own.

Also theirs is not founded on the same principles (Judeo-Christian, etc) as yours.

Being different is what it's all about, if everybody & everything was the same life would be boring and we wouldn't have much left to explore and experience.

I am sure any country and culture you visit will seem weird and strange in some aspects the same way yours is to them.

Cherish the diversity and difference and nurture it too so that we don't all become carbon copies of one another.

On the other hand, the US is the home of both "Joe Millionaire" and "Bud Bowl."

I study these cultures with effort (strive to),trying to learn Japanese one too and I must say that during earlier times,it was pretty much China that formed Japanese culture.
During later times, west had itīs important influence but not in the same manner I think.
Of course Japanese adopted what would fit for them.
Itīs all a matter of study, even though even when you learn more and feel more confident since you can look calmly at things you would not have previously noticed or would have found bizarre, you would also create new ones...
just my cents.

"well....we could start with cartoons of multi-pen ised demon monsters raping nurses then destroying an entire city with said pen ises shooting exploding laser semen.

Lol.I think this a case of modern Japanese culture which we get "introduced" to,which however does not give a very good picture...like I needed to say that.
Take a look at any depressing US flick that pop out like mushrooms under rain.
Well if weīd be discussing anime (or manga) in which is the case in this illustration (even though I could no less about it) we could say that at least manga is the entertaiment of pretty much any age or status and not all like that.

Then when it comes to sumo,I would make my best to stay away from such unhealthy habits (Whatever...as seen, one may not live very long with all that mass around)
One requirement being strong bones to hold all that mass up there (most of it should be centered around legs and hips) could be called fitness though, and yeah they have muscle too.
Might be good to point out though that even though there are certain regulations there, lighter classes also exist where players are rather fit (I have not seen much of that though)
As if it should be considered budo or not...I would stick more with martial sport even though there is a certain refined etiquette included.
Sidenote:Morihei Ueshiba studied sumo.

Anime is as varied as anything.
How about Heidi and many others for the little kiddies?

One thing that many forget in order to become a Rikishi, you need to be accepted into one of their schools and from there on your life is 100% Sumo.

It is not a part-time sport, but a full-time commitment and way of life.

If sumo had weight classes, would the obesity disappear?

Laughing Cow
01-05-2003, 06:22 PM
Sumo has 2 major divisions and each has ranks within.

What is normally seen on TV is the higher Division only.

Rikishi need to win the majority of their bouts in a tournament to advance or stay in the same rank, performance drops and so does their rank.

Their fights are against all the competitiors (regardless of rank) within their major division.
Price money is only awarded to the winners of each bout.

There are many smaller rikishi that easily can manage their bigger opponents like Akebono, etc.

Chang Style Novice
01-05-2003, 06:34 PM
Right, but the divisions are based on win-loss records only, right?

Any smaller sumo may face any larger sumo in his division and viseversa, if I understand correctly. Size doesn't enter into it, except as it makes it more difficult for your opponent to move youor reach around to get a grip on your whatsitcalled (I mean the silk sash, you pervs!)

Sumo is a very cool sport with a high level of skill required. It's techniques are usefull even if your built like a mountain. As far as I can tell from the research I've done, it was a major influence for Ueshiba's Aikido. I also like that their title can be stripped (I've heard) for social indescetions. Sumo are expected to be role models and moral exemplars.

Japan . . . it's weird.

The Chinese think it's weird.

In asia, they seem to be the only ones with a more highly defined sense of irony than Americans. They are famous for being the major porn producer of the eastern hemisphere, and with and emphasis on s&m. The Chinese, in addition to thir other predjudices against the Japanese, feel that they can't trust Japanese because they are "too veiled and mysterious". I burst out laughing the first time I heard that.

Not really, there is also a criteria of "required" weight involved.

Especially during the lower ranks a Rikishi will need to add a certain amount of weight within a certain time or he gets the boot.

While there are no "weight classes" as lets say in boxing, weight still does play an important role.

I will need to hunt up the exact rules again.

YES ! !! Japanes gangster movies are the best. A bit slow moving by American standards but VERY entertaining. Check out any thing with Beat Takeshi. For more in depth recomendations you could contact www.cinefilevideo.com in LA. They've got tons. 'Brother' is a good one.

Interestingly, the last one I watched had a wondefull 10 minutes or so of the thugs killing time at their hideaway on the beach. What did they do? - -- - SUMO !

There was even this one director who liked to satirize the Yakuza. After his first big hit, he received 'a warning' of some kind. Aftern his second, he 'fell' out of a window. (I forget the director but ---blatent plug for kid brother's store - - - the folks at cinefile could fill you in.

The women? I think the main thing that Chinesen women have over western women is just that IN CHINA they are mostly all thin and with perfect skin. Nevermind that the Chinese girls are all jealous of western womens figures. Same problem, get confused between T.V. and movies and real life. ---- just the same thin and with good skin goes a long way.

Just some comments on a few of the posts:

1) Sumo is linked to the creation myth in Shintoism. The connection of Shinto to sumo is still very strong in modern times. If you understand Shintoism than sumo is not so weird. The competitions are a symbolic reenactment of the battle that led to the creation of the world.

2) Japan may be the porn capital of Asia, but the cathouses of Bangkok, Thailand and around Subic Bay in the PI would be able to produce much worse if there was production money comparable to that in Japan. Taiwan is also the voyeur-cam capital of the world. Upskirt videos, dressing room cameras, and toliet cams have the Taiwanese govt. in a tizzy trying to create a vice squad capable of countering the fads.

3) Ueshiba had a background in a sumo-derived from of combat grappling. This combined with the fact that he was built like a ball as a young man leads me to believe that he might have excelled at it (he was, on occasion, mistaken for a sumotori in his younger years). Even in the book "Budo" there are a few pictures of a very fat, young Ueshiba.

4) Some have expressed the thought that the Japanese are "enigmatic". It reminds me of a conversation between an American politician (I can't recall who) and a Diet member during a strained trade negotiation. The American politican asked, "Why do the Japanese delegates complained that they are misunderstood while doing nothing to aid in our ability to understand them?" The Diet member smiled and replied, "That is being Japanese." Read Japanese books on the art of war and strategy, and you will see the lesson of subterfuge stressed to an even greater level than that of strategists from neighboring Asian countries (ie. China's Sun Tzu). It is the core of the Japanese art of war, and in Japan, business is war.

5) ESPN has sumo tournaments that feature lighter weight classes.

6) There is a minimum height requirement in sumo. One recent sumotori had sillicone injected into his scalp (giving him a minor conehead), so he would just make the minimum height requirement. He was quite good.

7) There are some sumo throws that are almost like "sacrifice" or mutual throws. The split throw mentioned earlier may be one of them. Whoever touches the ground first or is thrown from the ring first loses, even if both fighters go down or are thrown out of the ring.

8) Anybody that doubts their agility should watch these giants spin around in mid-air trying to being the second man to hit the mat during a mutual throw. Sumotori can do full splits. Most people that obese would have to wear slip on shoes because they can't reach their own feet. I know nothing of the cardio impact of their weight/training regimen.

9) The "fixing or working" of some sumo matches was revealed recently by a retired sumotori. The popularity of the sport was unaffected. As I mentioned above, sumo is a representation of an ideal and that alone pleases the Japanee audiences.

I forgot how the Taiwanese, from the slanted perspective I get here in China, are considered more pornographic in their after hours behavior than the Japanese and I must admit the Japanese rep on this front comes in large part from their being the most economically developed in Asia. (especially in areas like internet sites and VCD manufacturing) Also, Chinese just love to find anything wrong with Japanese.

Sumo and Shinto - yeah. I thought everyone knew that and was just ignoring it on purpose so it would be easier to call Sumo weird.

Ueshiba - In addition to what you mentioned, how could he NOT be influenced by Sumo?I think any Japanese working on a throwing art would have to be influenced by Sumo to a degree and O-Sensei was a Shinto fanatic.

"Ueshiba - In addition to what you mentioned, how could he NOT be influenced by Sumo?I think any Japanese working on a throwing art would have to be influenced by Sumo to a degree and O-Sensei was a Shinto fanatic."

I might want to mention this in a forum like aikidojournal.com never have I seen this mentioned, crosslinks to arts like ba kwa have been made and talked about.
This,I have not seen to be mentioned even minorly (besides that he studied it) Ueshiba was small (I dunno about fat,I have the idea that he was rather athletic in his younger years, comparatively. He had health issues though,to a degree)
Personally, the arts would seem like night and day, competitive and "passive" etc.
Yes,he was a shinto fanatic.
Iīm yet to find a link for the basis of sumo influencing aikido,if pointed out,Iīm happy to know that.
But thatīs for it on my part so far.
Thereīs a story though on how Ueshiba asked a great sumo wrestler to push him over,so to speak.
He sat on a chair and asked the wrestler to use all his strength to shove him down, with dissatisfying results.

It is a difficult book to learn physical skills from because the images are small and dark for the most part and the captions are a little thin on info. The value is in the bio info, aiki poems, and the fact that it is considered a primary resource of both early and later aikido.

chingei ... whats with insisting that all (or even most) japanese women are beautiful? im with 7star 100% here .... i too have seen enough avarge looking japanese women to know that they aren't all hot. i mean the same is true of any culture ... you can not have all of the people being good looking or the standards would simply change ... the beautiful would become avrage and the divine beautiful. if it weren't for ugly people like me there would be no beauty.

lets take porn for example. i actually find it harder to find an hot asian chick in hardcore porn than a white girl. same with amature sites. this is coming from a guy with a thing for asian girls too. i love asian women, but i really don't believe that the ration of beautiful to avarage people is any differant in japan than anywhere else. except for the fact that most asains are thin and have good skin like someone else said .... that does have some merrit but doesnt tip the scales to any extreme.
