hey again everyone, i have another question about computers maybe one of u can offer advice on...

right now i am running a pc with windows 2000 pro and also an apple mac g4 running mas os 9.2. Well, the pc is for internet and the mac is for study (as the uni server doesnt like my mac). Trouble is i only have 1 screen.

Now, the problem is, it detracts from my study when i have to keep changing to do research online or send email etc. I was wondering if i network the 2 computers together... is there any way i can dial the modem (thru the pc) from my Mac?

sounds a bit weird i know but it would really help me to study and do research online at the same time (so i dont bum around online so much).

if anyone has any advice, thanks a lot :)

Dawood.

Slap a Lan Hub/router between the Modem and the 2 PC's. They should be got fairly easy and cheap.

My Lan at Home setup is as follows:

ADSL Modem --> Lan Hub --> PC's & Mac when friend visits.

No hassles, he simply plugs his Powerbook in and off he goes.

Or get an external Modem with router build in.

Hope this helps.

I was just about to say that. My brother has the same thing at his house.

Or, check if you rmonitor can support switching between two computers - some can - but usually only top of the range ones.

Lastly, get someone to get your mac working on the net, it SHOULD work.

d@mn u guys r smart! i will see what i can do.

sharky: it DOES work, but not thru the university server which is free, dunno maybe its to do with their setup or something? so thats why im using the pc.

Does it have a network card man? If it has one it should work??

Standard ethernet right? Your pc is hooked up to the uni Janet?

not so modern sharky! my pc is hooked up using a dial up which is on an intenral phoneline. so i internally dial the uni server to get my connection (internal calls r free).

i tried all last year to get my mac hooked up but the uni server didnt like it. cant afford an outside line this year so am using the pc :(

Dawood.

There are Display switching boxes available., but I think they are a bit pricey.

You can dial from which Computer the screen should get the signal, most of those I think can handle up to 4 Computers.
Those are often used in the Computer Industry.

Best bet is go and find an old Monitor for free.

Hope this helps.

this uni would be much better if they got those 10MB connections they were talking baout these last 2 years...

yeah, try and get an old 15 or 17 inch to use on the pc?

if you wanna splash some cash you can get a nice ctx monitor for 89quid (17inch) from dabs.co.uk

i agree with sharky ... it should work.

with the mac the only thing i could think of is to check and make sure the dns numbers and domain are entered correctly.

if i remember rigth you go to apple, control pannels, and tcp/ip. there should be 2 boxes at the bottom. one reads name server or something. you are basically putting 2 ip addresses in here.

ex:

101.101.101.1
101.101.101.2

the other box should read search domains or something. our customers put 1st.net in here. im not sure that this setting is crucial or what the uni would need you to put in there.

the other basic settings i believe are in control pannels and remote access (ppp on older os's i think) ... these should be pretty easy to figure out.

earthlink also has a great tech page that helped me one day when i couldnt figure out this ladies problem with her mac.

It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work. It should work.

When you say 'it didn't like it' that's being a bit vague :)

I have a powerbook and it's all i use and i can dial up or plug it into anything and it works fine man.

Ask the uni people for help, or go into the comp sci dept and ask some geek there.

Or, tell us exactly how/why it won't work?

the hting is i can get my mac to work at home, so it seems to be somehting to do with the uni... when i called the uni IT support, they didnt have a clue as u would expect  so thats why i just used the pc.

well that would be two seperate profiles right? an entree for your home isp and an entree for your uni connection. maybe not ... i dunno macs ... only seen a lil bit of them from having to stumble my way through setting people up on them.

but if you do have seperate profiles for each connection then one being configured right wouldn't mean that the other is.

what os are you running and what exact error does it give you when you try to connect o the uni server ... theres a mac guy up here that might be able to point you in the right direction.

Bad planning. ;) ;)

Plenty of Software that will allow you to do so.

"someitmes it doesnt even dial the server properly for some reason though"

ok this is basic and might sound stupid, but do yu have to dial a 9 to get out? i can't recal how many customers i setup that called back immediately, unable to connect, cause i didnt know they were at school or simply forgot to put the 9,, in the dial up number.

GunnedDownAtrocity
01-11-2003, 04:04 PM
or sh it ... do you even need to get out since your dialing into the uni?

Sharky

Exactly. When downloading porn, you have to PLAN ahead, y'hear?

You have to THINK about these things.

sharky ... i asked cause i was impressed with those lyrics ... my exposure to rap is pretty limited but i havent often heard people rappin words with more than four letters that actually had flow.

Well, there are a few ways I can think off, though I am not sureof your situation nor do I know MAC very well.

1. You should be able to share connection on your Windows 2000 Pro and you should be able to choose an option, something like "Enable Connection Sharing" and more importantly "Enable on demand dialling"

2. Now I am not sure if you MAC works like this (OS-X?) (I know nothing about MACs except it crashes 10 times a day) but you can set your X export to an external IP address (set to your Windows machine) and run something like EXCEED. Everytime you run a new Window, X will spawn a new EXCEED window on your PC, so you can work on your PC, be on your MAC simultaneously.

3. Get yourself a router that can auto-reconect on demand. Second hand, these should be dirt cheap for a decent one. I know many Cisco's have this built in, I forget where it is so set up in the IoS. You can also cause it to disconnect after X minutes of idle.

4. Run WinVNC on your Win2000 and run the client on your MAC (does VNC come with MAC) it should... hmmmm

o well.... hth
