License plate imprint helps track down delinquent driver

KUSATSU, Shiga -- A hit-and-run driver who fled a three-car pile up he caused has been arrested after an imprint of the license plate of his car was left on the bumper bar of the first car he struck, police said.

Yasuhiko Yokoyama was arrested for negligence resulting in injury and for breaking the Road Traffic Law in connection with the Feb. 1 accident.

"The immovable evidence (on the bumper bar of the victim's car) led to the prompt arrest," a police officer said.

Police said the 26-year-old company employee was driving through Kusatsu on Feb. 1 when he slammed into a car being driven by a man from Kyoto. The Kyoto man's vehicle slammed into another two cars, but Yokoyama sped off.

Unfortunately for Yokoyama, he didn't realize that the impact of the crash he had caused had left an imprint of the license plate from his car on the bumper bar of the first vehicle. He was arrested as soon as police found the imprint on the victim's vehicle. (Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 7, 2003)
