Anyone here ever do them? they have a couple throughout the year which aren't quite UFC/K1 style fighting but I am probably going to sign up for a couple. Wanted to hear if anyone had any advice etc?

closest i've come is sparring with a toughman competitor. at least, he said he was a toughman competitor. never actually saw him on that show though.

I've seen them. Most of the guys are of the big/strong/clumsy variety who throw lots of windmill type puches. If you have at least decent footwork and hand speed/ boxing skills you will prob. do well. The one's I've seen don't have kicks or ground fighting. They also have only a few rounds.

that used to be true. but lately, the actual boxing talent has escalated considerably. not in every case, i'll grant you. but there are plenty of legitimate boxers in the toughman now.

I was watching the news the other night and they were doing a short on some of the competitions around town and I think I might be able to do pretty good. They all wore headgear and light gloves so it wasn't quite "reality" fighting.

It's sad, we have events like toughman locally here.

I went to the one last year. The stand up fighting division consists of 3, one-minute rounds. Most of the guys were so out of shape, they couldn't even keep their gloves up by midway through the second round.

If I wasn't such a fat-asss, I'd enter it, but since I'm in the top-most weight category, I'd be up against rednecks that outweigh me by like 100 pounds.

ah, okay. maybe on the local level, the boxing is pretty sad. but based on the FX toughman show, some of those guys have some legitimate skills.

No, this is just small time stuff. We have a couple of places locally that do some toughman/ultimate fight/submission competitions and I figure heck why not!

red5, I went to see what it was all about a couple of years ago.
I mean, $500 bucks for an evening wouldn't be to bad. But, I
didn't want to go to one w/o checking it out first.

A couple things I learned:

At least in WNC and the SE region people train for these things
and tour, following them to one National Guard Unit to the other.

In the HVW div (the one I would have been in) the sky is the limit.

If I had entered that one I would have had to fight a guy who
was 6'7", 330 lbs and NOT fat. This guy could ***** slap his
kids in the back of a 15 passenger van!! There would have been
no way I could have out boxed him. I walked out of the bathroom
and accidentally stood next to him the first time I saw him and
my head didn't reach his shoulder.

So, I decided that getting my fine white ass creamed by that
large gentleman was not worth $500.

If you are in a weight range that covers 15 or 20 lbs then you
wouldn't have that issue but unless you are confident that you
can win with boxing rules....

you'll never know till you try. Watch a few of the contests, then go for it.

I am going to go check out a few and see what they are about in the next month or so.

Oso- I am 210lbs, not sure how the weight divisions are setup here.

seven, thanks for summing up :)

red5, I can't remember exactly but I was 225 which put me
in the highest weight class which was open ended.

I just no that if that monster had landed a good one on me,
which he probably would have, I'd a been knocked the fug out.:D

correct, and I'm betting that guy was tougher than me. :D

100+ pounds and over half a foot in height means I get a
fuggin 2x4 and sneak his azz. fug a bunch of kung fu.
