The hammer (chui) was a type of mace was originally constructed of stone or heavy wood, and later was made of metal. The weapon is used both singularly and in pairs.
There is evidence that this weapon has been in use as early as the Han Dynasty (23 - 220 A.D.) when stirrups appeared. The stirrup gave the horseman the ability to control his horse and a stable platform to strike with his shock weapon.
I strongly suspect that the weapon was primarily a cavalry weapon but could and was used on foot from th e ground as well.

One often sees this weapon in hands of Buddhist and Taoist deities where it is an emblem of power and authority.

Both single and double versions of the weapon are part of Shaolin curriculum.rˇˇˇˇ
