If memory serves, his original base style was under Chan Poi - Wah Lum Preying Mantis.

When Chan moved from Boston to his Orlando location many years ago, there was a big deal article in Inside Kung Fu about how close a student Yao Li was and how Chan was turning over the Boston school to him.

Then, some time later, there was a falling out. If that one went the way of most of the Wah Lum instructors that have fallen out with Chan Poi, Chan typically tells them they are no longer authorized or allowed to teach anything they learned from him.
