View Full Version : Your Ideal Job?

Serpent

I know a lot of people have to juggle family and work around their kung fu practice.

With that in mind, what would be your ideal job, that would allow you to prioritise everything in your life the way you wanted to?

For me, I guess it would be making a full time living from instructing!

my ideal job is no job. :D

OK, assuming you have to earn a crust as you don't have super-wealthy parents or a timely lottery win!

I wouldn't mind doing what FT was doing - full time instructing/training with maybe a TCM clinic on the side. But there ain't that much money in that so I would want to be financially independent first. :)

Perfect Job.

MA full-time is not my game.

Bassically any job that sticks to fixed hours and pays a good salary.

Come to think of it, I had lots of spare-time when I worked shifts as an operator.

But I guess my Wife would kill me if I go back to shift-work.

OTOH, she stuck with me when I did 24/7 callouts and standby. (up to 3 calls a night)

hehe.

In that case, the job I have now. We've got a 20,000 sq ft. gym on the property, and I have enough time to train every day and still be with my family.

something regular that has a regular wage, anything as long as it is not too boring or at least gives me the change to concentrate my mind on something else as i turn in to a robot.

i would love to train MA as much as possible, but its to enhance my live - i dont think teaching full time is very financially secure unless you "water down" and i dont wanna do that.

what about you serpent? :D

SevenStar, you're a lucky SOB!

I'd like a job that was well paid enough so that I only had to work two or three days a week to be secure (I have no desire to be rich). That way I would have more time of my own to do the things I live, especially training more.

Anybody know any jobs that pay well part time!?

"OK, so other than protitution!?"
*Drug dealing?

I actualy plan to teach full time, i spend three hours a day minimum *with* my instructor so im definately leaning that way.

What concerns me is how to teach and make a good living *without* compleately pawning the art.
My instructor makes a small living by teaching full time but im the type of person who likes to be comfortable financialy. He also does not like to teach 'classes' prefering for the small group approch or preferably private.

Still i have to admit im pretty lucky really, i have two jobs and both of them know about my training and structure my hours around it. Which is pretty darn cool of them really:D

Am I so predictable? *sigh*

Well, you see there are two angles to prostitution - you can prostitute yourself, or you can become a pimp. :D

Drugs is a good one, but really dealing in any illegal goods is fairly profitable. I reckon if you could get hold of some good radar detectors you could make an absolute mint in NSW. Probably even more in Vic.

You could always set up one of those porn websites. Porn is always a good money spinner.

It is funny we are having this conversation because I have been thinking of ways to make a motza so I don't have to slog for the rest of my life. The trick is to identify a niche market before someone else does and get into it ASAP. I have a few ideas but can't really act on them for a few years yet :(

OK, people, let's just diso**** anything illegal, yeah?

I'm fundamentally opposed to risking my liberty. I mean seriously. If someone locked me up I'd go absolutely nutso, no question about it.

So, nothing illegal.

And nothing so bloody idealistic as Kung Lek's suggestion!

Kung Lek, there's a small handful of people that do get to that stage, but it only happens after several years of more than full time effort! ;)

I got a good idea. Start up a new school teaching a rare and mysterious martial art that no one has ever heard of before. Give yourself a cool title and charge megabucks for lessons (even more for private lessons). How is that for original?

:D

OK seriously. I have been thinking about silly little niche markets that might be worth tapping into. One idea I had was that most offices nowadays have miles of partitioning. There must be a niche market for partition decorations - you know, silly toys that kind of stuff. The chicks especially would go for it.

Another idea I had was a easy partitioning system for offices so that you could a) put it all together without calling in the costly office refurbishers and b) reconfigure it easily as required.

I've had a few IT-related ideas as well but I will have to give them more thoughts.

Say hi to her for me, ive been slack and havent been in contact with her for a while.

Hope you guys don't mind if I still answer the question (pardon my interrupting the conversation).

My ideal job is the one I'm training for and working a really BORING job to get there. I'm earning my credits to upgrade my Teacher's License in Massachusetts. I have to do my student teaching next January and then I'm all set to get my career off the ground: High School English teacher.

at this point, nothing that distracts me from contemplation and and turning that into action. basically, the "white tower" with opportunity for interaction. Almost a monastic state of mind, without the religion.
A winning lottery ticket would be great. I've won before. $1.00, several times. I mean the biggie.

If I had it to do over, I would have become a hypnotist. My specialty would have been to break mental programming caused by mistreatment, indoctrination of all sorts, and cults. I think that is exciting and would have afforded me a good living. Martial arts would be my primary personal interest, but that would not be the way I would earn my living. Yet, those skills would be used in my work. This is an ideal I see in the world as it is.

Y'know, it's a headache, but being a landlord can be a good source of supplemental income that doesn't take up much of your time.

You have to really be up on the legalities of rental contracts and such, though.

I'm a massage therapist & I wouldn't say it's an ideal job but it's pretty sweet. I make a decent living working part-time, helping people, and learning more about the body & its mechanics every time I work. Plus, I work at the local university - basically I get paid to give college girls massages. Now, I know what many of you are thinking, it's not like that... :)

I get paid to teach self-defense to college girls at two universities...I know what you're talking about.

How is the situation set up at the college you're working through? Are you an adjunct involved in a particular course, or do you work on a contract basis?

Robin,

I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Truly dedicated teachers are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks, Guys :)

Teaching TKD for the past 5 years to that age group (and lower) has been invaluable to me as a guide and to help me figure out exactly what I want to do.

I'm already taking apart some novels I know the kids will be reading in my classes and figuring out lesson plans (under the guidance of my father--a high school teacher for 35 years). I'm planning like I already have a job even though I'm a year and half away.

And good luck to Kungfu Boy--it'll be hard being silent when the club comes--:D

Watchman,

I work at the student health center on campus. It's a great setup - they provide the space & the equipment, they do the marketing & set appointments. I just show up and do the work. Really, the service is available to all university students, faculty, & staff but mostly it's female students, and some female faculty, who come in for massage. The nice thing is that the university partially subsidizes the whole thing so the university community gets affordable massage therapy & I get a fair amount of work. Who'd have thought this would happen in Arizona of all places?
