Hello,

Im tring to find informaton on GAN-SAU like done in first form. I'm glad this site exist.

Definition from nice website (http://www.lianyee.com/english/wg_voc_e.htm)
GAAN-SAU : Splitting-block/Cultivating-hand
GAN-SAU : cutting down
I dont understand the 2 definitons of splitting-block or cultivating-hand and cutting down hand. What does it mean splitting and what does mean cultivating. Someone told me cultivating mean farming plowing but i dont see how lineal motion in a form can be described by a non linear plowing motion. I use to work on farm. i can see how gan sau could cutdown in the slt, but how should it look like? I did a search online and found these -
example 1 (http://www.wingchun.org/viewpt/v2p7n6.jpg)
example 2 (http://www.wingchunnyc.com/techniques/pictures/slt/0448.htm)
example 3 (http://www.wingchunkwoon.com/images/gansao_f.jpg)

I also found these -
posible ex of cuting down
using double gan sau to block a kick. (http://www.combatcentres.com/tech_03.html)
gan su against sidekick (http://www.wingchunnyc.com/techniques/java_animations/lb_g.htm) - in this example the guy used low right gan sau, but didnt make contact. why do it in the first place.
most important is for me to get the idea in the form. I understand applicatons vary. thank you experts! Drac

The character Gan (or Gaan, there's no official agreed upon way to romanize the sound of Cantonese words), roughly means to till or cultivate (like a farmer does his soil). Think of it in that context (not modern Western farming ;), like a knive carving a line through the earth, and you'll have the idea.

How it "should" look will depend on the individual teacher in question (mine aligns differently than all of the pictures you linked to). Everyone has their own opinions, their own primary considerations. If you're a beginner, follow what your sifu tells you and test it while training with a partner to make sure that matches what you're doing. If you're experienced, work on finding the most efficient method of doing it, and then add layers. Is it effective in its position? Does it cover during its path? Does it open the least amount of "holes" as possible? Can it be used both offensively and defensively? Defensively, is it using the opponent's momentum to take away their balance? Offensively, it it cutting into an opponent's center, or causing their center to be changed, in such as way as it enables easier follow up offense? Defensively, does the path enable lock/grab prevention/escape. Offensively, does the path allow you to disrupt an opponent through loks/grabs? etc... etc... etc...

drac12a1 - The gan/gong sau in the second application was not against the sidekick, but against the punch.

I'm in NY also. If you would like to meet for more questions, you can IM me.

Thanks Rene.

I feel like a beginner. What I learned It works with my frends at my school and someone in the gym asked me some questions about it that blew m confidence. It was annoying and I felt like this looks like another wing chun political my system is better than yours. I was waiting for him to sing some fanatic tune but he told me to make friends in the art to find out myself. Wjat a funny run in.

Hello,

To add more confusion to the topic I will add that in Koo Lo WC the first stage of Chi Sao is called Gaan Sao (Gun Sho) which means to Follow the Hands! Basically telling you to LISTEN!

So, thats another one for the list of Gan's!

:D

Think about the words

GAAN-SAU : Splitting-block/Cultivating-hand
GAN-SAU : cutting down

What is Cultivating? Look in a dictionary. How does it relate to cutting? Are they the same? Why would we need to cut/cultivate? contemplate this and it will be clear.

Cultivate->Plow->Cut->GAAN/GAN SAU

gan, gaan, jam-

actual motion details can vary with teacher and lineage.

gan/jam combination is there in biu jree and mok jong.
Separately they are there in sil lim tau.
