If you try to slam the brakes on your car onpurpose you kind of hold back, but if somone cuts you off, you brake instantly it just happens without out thought.

In the last few years, I've noticed that if I slip on the ice, I don't fall down, and if I drop a knife in the kitchen, I catch it by the handle in mid-air without thinking about it. I'm 49 and can do lots of things I couldn't do 20 years ago when I started martial arts.

For me from Kung-Fu from books, do the forms, think that It's real stuff you are defending against attacking. Think it real, then think it better than you. Faster than you, but only slightly. Next time through the form Will yourself to move in propper time. When you can match your upping, keep at that level but eventually up your thinking again. High ceiling.
