Has anyone read that Pavel book, Power to the People? It says that high weight and about 4-5 reps and two sets will build strength. Does this work?

Later...

If you read the book it should tell you why the program is set up that way. Why don't you try it and see?

Several people here on the forum have had good results using Pavel's program. It comes well recommended.

The cycling Pavel describes is essential for the rpogram to work. Read the book thouroughly.

Hey Ford, you mentioned the book Supertraining on another thread. Any idea where to get a copy for a decent price?

Ewallace. You could try Elite Fitness Systems site or maybe amazon/barnes and noble offer it used. It's currently out of print, and not many places carry it since it isn't reader-friendly.

Yup. It covers just about everything associated with strength training and diet in depth though.

But the following schedule really improved my power:

3 exercises bench press, deadlift, and squat
3 sets of each (8,5,3 reps)

the final set of each was at 90% of my 1 rep max.

While its power benefits are obvious, it has two other hidden benefits:

1) you do it once every 4 days
2) it's only 9 sets so it doesn't take very long

Downside: I wonder what 90% of a 1RM does to your blood pressure. Unless you're quite specific on your breathing, I gotta think you'll be doing the Valsalva maneuver from hell.

What do you mean by not user-friendly? Is it hard to read...kind of like a medical textbook?

Nick

I found PTP for about $20 over at amazon. Look for the Attn: Premier thread for the link.

Yeah. If you are looking for some dumbed-down, semi-witty reading like a Pavel book, then Supertraining is definately not the thing to get. The book is aimed at people with a formal exercise/medical education and reads very much like a textbook.

lol@abodo! Good one. :)
