I believe he states in his book that he was a student of Yip Man. But I don't have anything to go on other than that. Lots of people were technically students of Yip Man, but received the majority of their actual instruction from the senior students such as Wong Shun Leung.

Hi Keith,

From my experience, this is pretty normal for many martial arts schools and styles. The Sihings tend to be responsible for much of the training. Ben Der, a student of Yip Man for a while, also noted that it was very rare that Yip Man would spend time with the average student.

My lineage comes from Leung Sheung, which had no real senior to train him. So I wonder if part of our tradition of the instructor being hands on comes from this. Leung Sheung spent a lot of individual time with each student from my understanding. I wonder if TST and Lok Yiu also follow this model.

Chao was from a very wealthy family. there is no reason to doubt he was a private student of Yip Man. He doesnt teach publicly and never has to my knowledge and the books were written in th 70s-early 80s long before saying you were a private student of Yip Man would have had any value for someone that didnt teach or have a school. Also his books are full of great little tidbits that few at that time was showing. Even now how many are taught triangle stepping at the Chum kui level for example?

Hi,

Just to add, those are probably the only Wing Chun books that I think are worth the cover price, as far as learning anything serious about wing chun. The photos suck, but the info is actually pretty good.

Of course Rene's books are pretty good too. I like them more for the historical info and a breif look into YKS. Leung Tings are probably the most thorough and chopfull of good tib bits, though highly political and shallow in many places.
