This is for everyone who has ever watched a kungfu instructional video and has an opinon on what exactly you can acheive with these things. These choices are based from the "corispondence(sp?) programs but for fun let's say the person doesn't have contact with a live instructor ever. Don't be shy I want to know everones opinon!

There are other variables, does the person have any MA background? Is this person working with others that have a background and learning from a strong base?

If you have someone who has three years experience in the arts, but must now use videos to suppliment his training it is very possible.

Some people can learn from scratch this way.

Most people do not have the disapline to keep up on it.

If they have a "base" in another system they would see the material through the eyes of that system and would be picking up new things so that would be catagory 2

videos are great for reviewing info that you're learning in class, or perhaps for viewing forms and techniques closely related to your own training. Other than that, it's just entertainment.

I see in my life near 50 instructional martial arts videos. Shaolin monk videos, chinese teachers, american and european kung fu coach, traditional masters, etc. I know one: dont try teach kung fu from videos, if you dont have a teacher. If you train kung fu 2, 3 years with good teacher, you may look at instructional videos for to know another forms or system. But basic you must train with master. I dont see another way.

The only time I've ever used a video was to back up stuff that I had learned at a Seminar. It's been very useful as an aid to the memory.

However, we're a bit thin on the ground when it comes to different kung fu styles here and i've been thinking of ordering a few forms videos - Hung Gar etc from Wing Lam to aid my learning. The style I study is Lau Gar (southern style) and I think the Hung Gar vids might help me.

I have a great Sifu but i figure that you can never learn too much...

I dunno - any advice?
