You can find a lot of Wushu vids at www.wushucentral.com

I haven't seen much traditional 3-section stuff online.

I know Ying jow pai has 3 section sets... (eagle claw)
Other than that, I dont know of any other styles to use it... I just want to buy one anyways... :)
Dont want to buy it if I cant figure it out, and Ive never seen it used so dont really know sh!t about it.
But it looks fun... :)

It's a dangerous weapon, and I really suggest getting some personal instruction with it. I have a permanent knot on my left elbow from learning 3-section staff.

That weapon is a cruel mistress....

Wah lum also uses the 3 section. Gave myself a concussion--then I wore my sparring headgear until I became proficient enough.

Id like to know some more nunchaku swings too... If anyone knows links to those...
Im sure the 3 section is dangerous to learn, Im not too worried bout it tho.
Already got tough ass elbows.

That's how we teach it. At least a month of practice in headgear until you learn some control. I still whack myself sometimes when I go behind my back...gotta remember to keep my head down.

The spins on the sides of the body while walking sometimes throw me, but I love the floor spins.

The only real trick with flexibles is you got to not flinch. If you flinch, you mess up the flow. Flinching comes with fear and padding your head does little to reduce fear, because once you take the padding off, the fear returns. So for me personally, padding my head never really helped.
When I learned 3-section, I worked with real sticks all the way through, no pads, except for one move where I was required to keep both ends spinning in opposite circles. That turned out to be quite the knee buster for me. So for that, I used a foam 3-section (http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/25-33.html).

I've seen some pretty amazing work with the 3-section, but nothing taped. I belive that if you want to take someone out of a fight, just give then the 3-section and watch them hurt themselves. Anyway SD, I believe it is part of the curriculum from 3rd to 4th (at least as an optional weapon).

I gt the three sectin staff w/ video from mamart (here). It's really good. It basically teaches you a bunch of tricks. My teacher was hanging out w/ his friend when he was abut 18 and the dude was swinging the thing around real fast. All the sudden my teacher felt smething wet splash on him. The dude had wacked his (own) skull right open and the brain was visible. He died.

Here you can see a traditional 3 section staff form, from a disciple of the late Master Lee Koon Hung.

You should start a thread on bizarre MA anecdotes!

jun_erh,

What style was that website? Is that the style that you practice? If so, where are you located?

I gt the starter kit from kungfumagazine. The style is the much maligned cntemporary wushu. I don't practice that style, but it has a section of the video that's just techniques. I wish ALL videos /dvd had that. I think you may have confused me with the other guy in terms of a website. I'm in Boston. study kuo shu, but vacationing frm it currently.

Also, the "yes" was a cover-up for an anecdote that I thought better of posting. It sure was funny though!

The website with the 3-section staff form didn't resemble any contemparary wushu that I have seen. In fact the 3 section form looked much like the form that I have seen performed at a tournament. And I practice the even much more maligned Shaolin-do.

Does anybody know what the law in the united states says about owning the staff? Thanks in advance.

Shaolin-Do

No laws on owning the staff, Laws on carrying it tho. Youd have to check, weapon laws vary from state to state.

Foam sucks to learn with. The weight and feel are totally different from a waxwood 3-Section.

We also make alumiunum 3-Sections for shows. They flash in the bright lights, and are light as hell.

Shaolin-Do

I like nice heavy ass redwood weapons.
Waxwood is too light... Its surprisingly sturdy tho. I pole vault around the yard on mine for fun sometimes... Dont like to practice with it tho. Too light. Makes the redwood a pain in the ass, and makes the 20 lber really really suck.

Gene - Check your msgs.

The lightness of the wax-wood staffs are the reason why they are so good. You can move them very, very fast.

We have different forms with waxwood staffs than we have with the heavier, brown, wooden ones.

Shaolin-Do

Really?
Hmm... We only use the big azz brown ones at my kwoon... I have the waxwood at home tho... and yeah, you can make that thing f*ckin sing....

i used to make 3 sectionals out of PVC plastic tubing with nylon rope...it's easy to make, it's user friendly and it works like a charm without as painful a learning curve as wood offers. you'll still hit yourself, it just won't hurt as much.

hope it helps.

sincerely,
neil

ps. the form in the clip is very similar to the 'tiger-tail 3 sectional' set of mantis fame

It does vary from state to state. In Tennessee there is a statute for carrying any club, blackjack, or knife with a blade over 4" long "with the intent to go armed." My understanding is that most staffs, short sticks etc would qualify as a club. There are special laws for weapons seperated with a cord or chain as well, but they also have the "intent" part of the law. Basically, it's illegal to carry one for the sole purpose to have a weapon available i.e. to be armed. It's fine to have your dao, straight swords, staffs etc. when going to and coming from class or practice. There's probably federal laws for carrying certain blades and clubs accross state lines etc. Hope that helps.
