There's a shootfighting gym near where i live, and I thought about going there and see if it's good. But I want some opinions on it beforehand, from the smart people of KFO;). Is it a good martial art/sport to learn from, it seems like it to me, as they combine grappling and kickboxing techniques...?

If the school is good, i'd say go for it. I don't know anything about shootboxing, but combining grappling and kickboxing can't be all bad.

Oh, you wanted the smart people to reply. Oops.

Look up the ISFA and it will tell you what is legal or not.

There's nothing WRONG with shootfighting, and it will give you valuable skills. But shootfighting comps, in and of themselves, have specific rules that are more restrictive, usually, than some other amateur and pro MMA events.

What does ISFA stand for? I did a search and this (http://www.isfa.com/) was the first site that came up.

Edit: I didn't see anything on fighting within the first couple pages of my search, I didn't look any further.

SKF, International Shoot Fighting Association would be my best guess..

I know that it's a sport, but I would like to learn some valuable (kick)boxing skills and grappling techs, and when I'm ready, start full-contact sparring. it's just something I would like to play around with during the summer, until the JKD school I want to begin at, opens again.

the schools website is this: www.shootfighting.dk
it's in danish, but there is pics to look at..:D

I liked the "why shootfighting is better than standup" video.:D

Looks good to me, but I don't know what i'm looking at.

I should stop giving my opinion on this now, it's not helping.

I've actually never seen shootfighting. But it sounds ok.

The scandinavian SF gyms are connected in one large organisation, I think. I don't know how the danes are doing in nordic competitions, though.:)

OK, shootfighting, more opinions?

Oso
06-14-2003, 05:20 AM
well, let's get somebody to define it...I've never been really sure what it was...sounded like another hybrid attempt to capitalize on the whole Gracie inpired grappling craze...

chen zhen

They have this motto:

"what do a boxer, kickboxer and a grappler have in common? you can beat them!" (that is, if you're a shootfighter)

But Sakuraba, the guy who beat Royce Gracie, was a shootfighter..

Oso

chen zhen

Oso

Imho, the quality of a Shooto gym depends on the 'lineage'. I'm only familiar with two of them and the better of the two is the Shoot Wrestling as taught by Yori Nakamura (in the US). The head instructor of Shoot Wrestling is Sayama Sensei in Japan. Just beware as there are some Shootfighting orgs that aren't on the up and up.

Shooto is great. It is a sport but they train hard (i.e. athletically against resistance) and it's pretty well rounded. It requires you to know the various ranges such as punching, kicking, throwing, and submissions. It incorporates elements from Catch, Muay Thai, Sambo, Judo, and BJJ. The grappling (or the deliver system) apparently has improved as they have introduced BJJ type delivery system for their ground submissions. This is evidenced by watching older Shooto fights and comparing it to fights after BJJ became prevalent in the Shooto scene (mid-90's).

So SOME shooto is bad, SOME shooto is good.
Is'nt that the case with most else?

Go visit the school. The website you linked makes references to the "bad" organization, but take a look at the students and the skill of the teacher. The teacher does not necessarily reflect the organization as a whole.

There's several teachers.
The school has also won many tournaments in scandinavia, so I guess it's pretty good. I'll go there next week.

Don't listen to RM. Quite the sourpuss.

Most Shooto I've seen would put the lightsout on some of these rediculus kung fu *****es

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 10:20 AM
but you're a rediculous KF-guy yourself!:D

Kristoffer
06-30-2003, 10:42 AM
Nah I'm a hardcore Kung Fu fighter who cross trains in Muay Thai ;)

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 02:41 PM
cross trains MT?

did'nt know u did.

Kristoffer
06-30-2003, 02:49 PM
Sorta, I know ppl who train so I hook up n spar with them. Im currently deciding how I should do in the fall. Keep on the KF and muay thai on the side, only thai or start BJJ/shooto/thai.. I have a hard time deciding

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 02:51 PM
Only Thai vs. thai+shooto+BJJ=the last option. Only hindrance would be not enought time/money to train.

Kristoffer
06-30-2003, 02:57 PM
I know its cuz I found a MMA club that mixes all three styles. SO it's hard deciding

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 02:58 PM
If it's better than the Thai, then go for it. I wish we had good KF/MA in my country.:( :( :( :( :(

Kristoffer
06-30-2003, 03:05 PM
It's hard to decide coz I really like the KF. It's tough street fighting :D Full contact bloody as hell and our practioners is known to beat the **** outta thai boxers, but on the other hand the boxing is much cheaper... and the MMA have SO MUCH too offer in kinda cheap so... grrr

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 03:07 PM
Now I see what u mean. Finding KF that can beat Muay Thai is EXTREMELY rare. u should at least not forget the school, if u start the other thing.

Kristoffer
06-30-2003, 03:21 PM
No way, it's just that the KF club really grinds you to be a fighter. So your whole persona changes into agressiveness. I guess it helps but I feel I could need some new experinces.

I'm outta here soon (simpsons 00.35 kanal 3, if u get it)

chen zhen
06-30-2003, 03:28 PM
Yes, of course. (both with getting new experiences & the simpsons;))

But it's still rare to find KF like that in europe & especially scandinavia.
