Hello and welcome. This thread serves as an online p2p multilingual teaching institute for all KFO members. Here's your chance to learn the basics and beyond – and it's 100% free! If you want a word or a phrase translated, just post it here and we'll get back to you in no time.

Currently, our renown teachers are:

bodhitree - candidate commissioner for mandarin
chen zhen – commissioner for danish
Former Castleva – commissioner for finnish
Kristoffer – commissioner for swedish
Laughing Cow - candidate commissioner for german
quiet man – commissioner for croatian
Sho - candidate commissioner for japanese

We are looking for commissioners for other world languages, especially chinese and japanese. If you are proficient in a language, no matter how obscure, please apply. The more the merrier.

the word ORA should have been in the title.. but oh well..:rolleyes: ;)

I know which people on the forums that are from japan and china, maybe I can make 'em come here. Yeah?
Also: now you have to commercialise it, like I did with the contests. Place a link to it in your sig or something.

quiet man
07-09-2003, 04:12 AM
'ORA' is limited. 'KFO' is thinking big! ;)

That's a good idea about the sig, I'll do it.

Shall we begin? Here are some basic MA terms in croatian:

martial art = borilachka vjeshtina

punch = udarac rukom

kick = udarac nogom

block = blokada

opponent = protivnik

fighter = borac

fist = shaka

teacher = uchitelj

I'll throw in the pronunciation guide later, coz I can't be bothered now. ;)

Laughing Cow

I can help with:

German, Japanese and soso English.
:D

Plus, a few others if you ask nicely.

chen zhen
07-09-2003, 04:30 AM
Danish translation:

Martial art: Kampsport (means literally "martial sport")

Punch: Slag

Kick: Spark

Block: Blok

Opponent: Modstander

Fighter: Kæmper

Fist: Næve

Teacher: Lærer

quiet man
07-09-2003, 04:31 AM
LC: thanks a lot, man (but only if you're good, since we're very demanding here ;) ).

Oh, and consider yourself asked nicely.

I can do Japanese single word and phrase translations from time to time. But as you know, sometimes it's very difficult to find correct translations for phrases. Things that I'll not bother to translate are jokes, vulgar expressions, etc.

Sho
07-09-2003, 04:49 AM
martial art = bujutsu
punch = tsuki
kick = keri
block = uke
opponent = aite
fighter = toushi (rough translation)
fist = ken
teacher = sensei

P.S. I can also translate Finnish when Former castleva is not available.

chen zhen
07-09-2003, 04:56 AM
Yeah, but FC IS the main finnish translator, so maybe we should wait for him to show up.. because, it would make more sense that there's one for finnish, one for japanese, etc than having 2 on the same lingo. U see what I mean?
But please go on with the japanese!:)

More translations:

Throw: Kast

Joint-lock: ledlås

Takedown: Nedtagning

Leg-sweep: Benfejning

Choke: kvælertag /there's a better translation for this, I just don't remember it. rough translation: strangulation-hold)

Thanks, sho. And don't worry about jokes or curses, we're dead serious here.

leg sweep = ashi barai
choke = shime

quiet man
07-09-2003, 05:09 AM
Chen zhen, I'm not so sure about the 'one language - one (wo)man' thing. Two heads know more than one. (edit - of course, we would need to have an agreement...)

Or are you maybe worried about your title :D ? In that case, you can be chief commissioner for danish. :D ;)

throw (noun) = bacanje

throw (verb) = baciti

joint-lock = poluga

takedown = not so sure, maybe rushenje

leg-sweep = chiscenje

choke (noun) = gushenje

choke (verb) = gush!ti

No man, I just think in efficient ways, on how to make this work. I AM the organiser of 2 sexy-contests, u know.. :D I know what works, and what does'nt in this KFO world:rolleyes: ;)

And yeah, let's change from martial terminology.. what should the next subject be?

quiet man

Here's croatian alphabet:

(pronunciation guide: 3. sounds like -ts-; 4. sounds like -ch- in cheap; 5. is similar, only much softer; 7. sounds like -j- in jump; 8. is similar, only much softer; 11. sounds like -g- in go; 14. sounds like -y- in you; 17. sounds like -ly-; 20. sounds like -ny-; 25. sounds like -sh- in push; 27. sounds like -oo- in boot; 30. sounds like hungarian -zs- in Zsa Zsa Gabor)

You know your about to have your ass booted? Before you go, lemme ask you a few questions...What martial art are you in? how long have you been in it? Are you mildly retarded? You do know the butt of all your "****bird antics" is the moderator of this forum?

Heres the general feeling of Chingei:

He should be disembowled by a pack of rabid R&B singers. Then set ablaze by disgruntled geriatrics. His corpse is to be defiled by a group of Steven King obsessed necrophiliacs. On top of all that his corpse is to be ****ed on every morning after a long night of drinking dark lager...

But seriously, no one wants you to die...just shut the **** up.

I wasn't expressing concern, I was letting you know how much of a retard you are for talking **** to a moderator. I personally don't give two drops of monkey **** if you stay or if you go. I think you should be booted. You've done nothing but express stupid, biased, and thick-headed views towards everyone on the ORA. What does this accomplish besides proving you have the maturity of a pre-schooler? Go ahead, make some sort of change to my Nik to insult me, you'd be proving me right. Not that you alread hadn't.

SHINOBI
TATSUMAKI shinobi literally means 'stealing'.
it is the kanji used in 'stealth' and 'patience'.

edit: forgot to mention it's also the 'nin' of 'ninja', and that Shinobu (the verb reading of 'shinobi') can be a name: usually a girl's name with just the kanji for 'shinobu' or a boy's name sometimes with the kanji for 'shinobu'+'osu' = 'stealthy push'.

tatsumaki: tatsu = dragon; maki = roll.
=whirlwind.

Mr Punch
12-11-2003, 09:59 AM
'anata' is the polite form of 'you'. it can also be loosely translated as 'darling', and it's not usually used for someone you don't know, or care for. so it has no place in insults. try 'omae'.

'desu' is also polite japanese. try 'da'. or 'daro' with a seriously rolled r.

"Takedown" has a long-winded explanation in my dictionary, which suggests that there's no generic term in trad Japanese arts, but I have heard 'taosuwaza'.

There is also of course: teikudaun
just as many people nowadays use
punch: panchi
and kick: kikku...
:rolleyes:

The joys of globalization!

Please note, if you use 'panchi' and 'kikku' in some of the more hardcore dojo in places like Saitama, the more trad fighters (shall we say, nationalist?) will practise their very best 'tsuki' and 'keri' on you...! :eek: It's a good way of learning the language!

sen no sen - early timing (attacking into the attack)
go no sen - late timing (attacking at the end of the attack)
sen sen no sen - really really early timing (attacking into the intent
to attack)

Extreme "sen":

Sen sen sen no sen: Going back in time and killing your enemy's parents before he was born.

Go go no sen: Hitting your partner's fist with your face.

Obscure sen:

Sen sen no sentaku: Waking up early to use the washing machine before everyone else.

Onsen no sen: Luring your partner into a hot spring before you attack.

Go no senbei: Being too late and missing the last rice cracker.

Senmu no sen: Using one's executive powers and ordering one of the OLs to attack in your place.

Gaijin ninja sen:

Go no sen: Not using proper long vowel transcriptions in writing Japanese and winding up with a couple of bowls of little black and white pellets for one's defense.

Sen sen no sen: Not realizing ****nyms are such an important part of Japanese language and only having 1000 old Japanese pennies for one's defense.
