Hey all
I'm quitting smoking again! I was researching TCM views of quitting smoking. The only thing I found was taking 'green tiger liver harmony' to help detox the system. Does anyone have any other advice? Much appreciated!:D

Dude
I just replaced cigarettes w/ wanking. I'm talking wanking 20 times a day, at the busstop, after meals, just keep on wanking!

chen zhen
07-10-2003, 06:01 AM
That can't be healthy..
some people eat a lot, some starts wanking apparently, after quitting the f@gs (cigs, I mean)
:D

bodhitree
07-10-2003, 07:02 AM
Dude I was just joking, no wanking. I'm just eating my committ losenges and avoiding things that make me feel like smoking. I got a break from classes right now and I no if I went outside I'd feel like smoking, so I'm in here talking to you. I actually plan on eating healthier now that I've quit, lots of fruits, veggies, tea, and water to help detox the system. And of course lots of practice. The lozenges came with a card to put in your wallet that said to name your top reasons for quitting and mine was to perform some longer forms better. If I practice short forms, I can do it with power and speed, but that starts going away after about 40 or 50 movements! NOT ANYMORE!!!!:) :) :D :p

How about the Shenmen point in the ear thats the classic point for giving up addictions.

How would u use that point? massage it, stick needles in it, whatever?

ntc
07-10-2003, 02:23 PM
ShenMen point normally needs to be needled. A licensed acupuncturist who knows auricular (ear) acupuncture should be able to do this easily, as ShenMen is a very powerful ear point and is frequently used.

ZIM
07-10-2003, 03:17 PM
IIRC, shenmen is located so: take your index finger and place it just inside your ear, gently go bakwards [towards the back of your head]. It is located at the join from earlobe to uh..ear. On the cartilage. If you scratch it, it feels kind of funny.. :)

I believe that accupuncturistas use a piece of gauze-tape with a pinhead in it to keep it stimulated during the recovery period.

I may be wrong here, so corrections would be most appreciated. Thanks!

ntc
07-10-2003, 04:18 PM
Zim,

You are correct. Ear-tacs (as they are commonly called) are used as prescription for patients to place on this point. They are used in the same way as thumb tacks are for paper on the wall... the tac is a square about 2.5mm wide with a very fine pointed needle in the center. The tac is placed on the ShenMen point and kept there for a certain duration of time. However, many acupuncturists also frown on using these tacs as they are very prone to causing ear infections.

Certainly.Anytime you feel like smoking, carefully stab yourself with a needle, that should keep it away.

On a more serious note, you MAY want to keep with you some objects that resemble cigarettes. Not saying that they have to but for some,it can be the case of having something to hold&"play with".Know what I mean?

chen zhen
07-12-2003, 03:40 AM
Maybe that would make more damage than good.. u have to keep away totally from the cigs, not having a substitute.

I´m not sure what you mean.
Sure antidepressants will alter you...who talked about antidepressants? Better or not, that can hardly be said, for their favour I could say that in some cases they have actually managed to stimulate growth of the matter (brain)
The whole smoking thing is about neurochemistry, and should there be permanent, physical changes, they would far outweigh those...ugh...psychiatric drugs you mentioned,I´d think.I´m willing to bet that smoking of yours has altered the neurochemical concentrationS of yours.Talking about such, never forget about memory problems, cognitive decline and greatly increased stroke risk.
Gongratulations,now keep it up.

I agree. Just the fact that the brain has some of its oxygen supply cut off is bad. I still wouldn't use something like welbutrin, Zyban, and some of the other Antidepressents that they use for smoking, But thats just me.

Your life becomes 7 minutes longer each time you resist the urge to smoke again.
Your lover will kiss you more often.
No more burn holes in your clothes.
You'll have more money.
Your chest won ’t hurt.
You won't wake up and cough up a bunch of mung.
Your clothes won't stink.
Neither will your car.
Fewer headaches.
Less general fatigue.
You won’t have to listen to people complaining about your smoking.
You're far (up to 50%) less likely to get heart disease or lung cancer.
People will stop bumming smokes off you.
You won't really care if you lose another lighter.
Your fingers will return to thier natural color.
So will your teeth.
You will no longer be negatively affecting the health of your children & loved ones.
Your sense of smell and taste will get much better.
You could make a few bucks selling your ashtrays at a yard sale.
Your breath won't offend your dog.
Your skin will look and feel better.
You won't get as many wrinkles.
You'll get colds/flu less often.
If you do get sick, you'll get better faster.
Your training stamina will increase dramatically.

congratulations!

True...

the lozenges are at any drugstore, I failed once with the patch also, however I didn't use it as directed.

Maybe dont drink or go to the club for a month or two after you quit, build a foundation! I got a buddy that does the same thing going a couple weeks or months then going back. everytime he drinks he ends up smoking. I don't have to deal with that because I don't drink, but I did give up the coffee for about 10 days.
Today is 15 days, the longest I ever got before (without incarceration) was about 49 hours! If I can do it, Y'all definatly can.

Hey Bodhitree. I'm a smoker myself, but I'll tell you what i'm finding.

I stopped somking for the 8 or so hours I'm at work, which was tricky at first, but just keep reminding yourself why you're doing it. Stronger, thicker erections, *ahem* I mean better cardio etc.

Anyway, i have a couple in the evening usually. But sometimes, because I've gone without one for so long in the day, and its been fine, I don't feel like one in the evenings, or I'll be busting for one after practice, and I say "no!" not until you get to the pub, so I wait, get a Burger King, walk to the pub and then, bam, I really don't want one anymore, not for a while at least.

And now, I get half way through one and think eurgh, I don't want the rest of that. And gradually, my body is going off smoking. And its just through trainng hard and not smoking before 6 o clock.

So if its really difficult for you to give up totally, and you think you'll fail, try that for a bit, and you'll probably get there in the end. Mind you, I've been doing this for ages, and I'm still having one or two a day lol

Whatever, good luck.

"How I Quit Smoking Cigarettes"
By CaptinPickAxe

I smoked for two years (on and off) and when I decided it was time to kick the habit these were the ways I helped deal with the stress.

1. Smoked Weed:
I know, I know "Its just as bad for you". Yes, but not when you smoke a bowl a day as opposed to a pack a day. I found it made me less irratable and help me forget the cravings.

2. Willpower:
I live with two smokers who religiously smoke. It wasn't the least bit hard for me to steer clear of the smokes when I had the thought, "I'm gonna quit" ingrained in my brain. Thier smoke didn't make me crave or irritable.

3. Being Active:
Once I saw the effect cigarettes had played on my lungs, I never wanted to smoke again. I felt like an asthmatic who just ran a marathon...and I was pizzed. Activities also help you keep your mind off of smoking. When you busy hiking or sparring you tend to think less about "Damm, I wish I had a stog."

4. Sex:
Nothing will calm you down more than sex. One session of sex amounts to 3 days of happiness and will help you not be irratable. Just remember not to light up during the post-sex coitial period;)

These were my tools to kicking the habit. I hope they've helped you along your path to a healthier, smoke free life.

Greetings brothers of willpower!

I just thought I'd add my 2 cents to the fray regarding the social aspects of smoking as an oft overlooked mechanism of relapse. Basically, one thing I've noticed at work is the smokers always take more breaks than the non-smiz types. So, some (myself included at one time) begin smoking to "hang out" and take more breaks from the drudgery of work. Furthermore, smoking is an activity which allows one to be completely submerged in, ignoring his/her surroundings and social discomfort of being in a strange place, instead of standing around with nothing to do. When I visited Seoul a few years back, I smoked quite a bit. I would estimate 90% of the men smoke there, and there were times when I was just standing around waiting for my friend and only Korean translator I knew. I was pretty hairy at the time, beard, dreads to the small of my back, etc. I drew many stares and it made me uncomfortable at times. When I smoked one of those generic Korean cigs, I could lean up against a lightpole or building and be completely submerged in my activity. I felt as if I vanished from the scene for just a moment - just long enough to regain my sanity. Oh well...

As for the wisdom weed of Solomon, it can certainly help with many ails but can become a persistent habit as well. One bowl is fine to take the 'edge' off, but when you start smoking entire joints to your head throughout the day, it becomes just another smoking habit. Caution. Be moderate....

Then again, I'm not one to criticize!:p
