Sorry for the "japanese" jingle but it seems to best describe the state things are in. Used to be someone was given a certificate (maybe) or something else from sifu to denote attainment of
skill.
Japanese Judo shows up and soon there are "belts" everywhere. Next someone comes up with the idea of "degrees" lol. NOW every dog and his fleas are grandmasters. True masters of traditional styles rarely describe themselves as such.....si-gung maybe....but "grandmaster"...
Soke (if I am correct) was a term in kabuki theatre to describe dead masters. Not a martial arts term at all......
Now we have the world "sokeship" council etc....so the slime spreads further. The same thing seems to be happening in kung fu circles now.
What I will never understand is how people who are still quite young can claim these titles. Funnier still is the idea that there are now gangs of "grandmasters" running wild!!!!
Better lock up your silver if these guys ever move to your town!!!!!
Anyways...for what its worth....R
