I had to eat a lot of chinese food, well I would have anyway, but I got a bunch of these red bags. I while ago I got this book called martial arts home training by Mike Young. Some of the cheaper things he recommends are like hanging a towel and punching that to work on getting a good snap and cellaphane bags. The idea being that you can strike them and they don't really go anywhere. He has a chamber of bags

x-ray paper can also work. you can easily tell by the sound just how snappy your strikes are. however, i don't suggest doing it at 2 a.m. -- the missus will kill.

He makes an interesting heavy bag using a like a 6 foot peice of telephone pole or something and put it in a tire and staple some padding on it. His back yard is all this bizarre stuff like the rock n roll dummy.

I built the battle pole in my apartment like a year and a half ago.
You can hang anything and punch it. Xray paper is probably the best.
