Very interesting article. This guy was a contemorary of Applegate and Sykes but stayed out of the limelight.

The article is interesting in that he was a high ranked judo/jujitsu practitioner but when he taught one of the first special forces units he taught a combination of stuff including what he called "Chinese foot fighting"

It's in the latest edition of Journal of Asian Martial Arts Vol 12 No 3

This quarter's issue also has a MMA article, a couple of teaching articles, an interview w/ Yang Jwingming and another CMA article.

Chinese foot fighting? Is that what those french sailors saw the Chinese practicing on the beach when they invented Savate?

O'Neil was Fairbairn's protege and was a 5th dan judoka as well as a master at the Fairbairn system of combat.

excellent link (http://www.gutterfighting.org/ONeil.html)

Where is my fellow gutterfighter BlackJack when you need him?

While in Shanghai, O'Neill immersed himself in the study of Asian martial-arts. He was a devoted practitioner of japanese judo, as well as several forms of "Chinese Boxing",

O'Neill was considered a very tough man in his day and had a reputation for not backing down from anyone. His skill in judo was highly praised even at the kodokan. O'Neill had studied under Uchijima, reknowned old time kodokan judo instructor. O'Neill was especially known for his grappling skill. The methods of hand-to-hand combat he devised and taught were greatly effective and such was proven in actual battle numerous times. O'Neill greatly influenced military close-combat for both the US Army and Marine Corps.

As I've said before, grappling is about as close to an "internal" feeling as I can understand. I think Pat saw the same flo wit da go in the chinese internal systems and decided they were worth investigating.

great links ST00.

Interesting allusion that O'neill may have learned Lian bu chuan.

There may be one or two things in the JAMA article not covered in the links ST00 provided. I will do a reread and post anything extra in the article.

not a guy to meet in a dark alley for sure, or a well lit one for that matter.

What'ssssss up ShaolinTiger.

That was a great article. I am planning on getting Mr.Cestari's seminar tape on the O'Neill system hopefully around this October.

That man is the real dealeeo when it comes to close combat methods, history, and all-infighting. One of these days I have to make the time to go sit at his knee for one of his seminars in new York.

I once heard that O'Neill practiced his infamous toe kick on pigs to demonstrate its ability to the new recurits.:D I also remeber hearing that he may of learned his footfighting methods from chinese loggers but I can not for the life of me remeber where?

Either way the history of the Black Devil Brigade is interesting to say the very least. Bad asses oh' plenty.

Cheers
