View Full Version : How long can you hold your breath?

I saw a guy on Fear Factor do it for 2 minutes and 7 seconds!!! My best time is around 1 minute and 30 seconds, and that's with hyperventilating beforehand.

While I'm on the topic, Ninjas would rule on Fear Factor. They could kick everyone's ass on all the physical things (like jumping from helicopters or balancing on a beam that's suspended high in the air while walking across it to get a flag or something).

Is holding your breath something that improves as you do it?

I've gone about as long as ironfist.

And ninjas would totaly own fear factor. Unless you think like Oso, in which case ninjas suck ass.

Just did 2 min. The last 20secs were pretty intense, though. I don't practice it, but I did it for the first time in as long as I can remember about a month ago after watching Fear Factor :D when a bunch of Miss America hopefuls were submerged in water. One managed 1min30something and I couldn't have her beat me :o.

I heard an interview with a freediver on the radio last week in which he said that his best is 7min. He said that no matter how many times he does it, he never loses the feeling of struggling not to breath after about 2min. They also talked about studies that show short-term memory loss in people who hold their breath!

You can improve with practice. However, holding your breath kills brain cells as they starve for oxygen, hence the memory loss thing.

I can do about 2 mins on a good day.

Just can't quite think where abouts on my CV I'd put breath-holding, probably because theres better things to be doing with my time.

its easier to do in water than on dry land, your body has several mechanisms that kick in when your face in submerged. Also the pressure of the water increased the ammount of O2 dissolved in your bloodstream. People who free dive have to look out for shallow water blackout, where you go unconscious as you resurface.

I just tried and got 1:45, without hyperventilating.

I used to be able to do 2:30, back when I was lifeguard certified. I haven't swum in quite a while, though, so my only breath-holding practice has been being caught in chokes :D

I ve always wanted to learn free diving, I've seen those guys go for 5 mins and more without any hassle

haven't you guys figured out you can't say 'ninjas' and my name in the same post.

if there were any real ninjas left they would rule FF.

However, there are no real ninjas left. Only fakirs.

and my personal best was 2:56 several years ago. Havn't trained it in a while though and I do believe you can train this ability because I went from a minute or so to 2:56 over about 6 months.

I've been holding my breath since I arrived in Tokyo three years and nine months ago.

And I'm about as sharp as the Electrolux factory after the Great Hundreds-and-Thousands Faulty Pack Recall Scandal of '02.

BTW, Fear Factor smear factor: you don't even come close to the Japanese versions.

They invented that kind of show.

Hell, you can't beat the ninja vs Miss Japan Bukkake hopefuls final for holding their breath...

Taomonkey makes sense, but it actually worked the opposite way when a bunch of us tried it. Perhaps the temperature of the water had something to do with it?

Here's something to try.

Submerge your face in ice cold water, then see how long you can hold your breath.

When our Sigung had us submerge our face in a cold spring puddle up in the mountains, some of us couldn't get past 15 seconds. I got to :30 seconds when usually I can go at least 1:30. We guess that your body goes into some kind of shock due to the cold???

Really don't know, but it was very interesting. And pretty funny to see.

mat, why, jus cuz i know what 'bukkake' means?;)

Amp: no, try this: lay on your back and try holding your breath when someone is dripping water onto your face at the same time people are running back and forth across your gut:cool:
