Two water breaks in a two hour class.

oso, i used to be a gin & tonic guy , but then i converted to vodka on the rocks and stayed put since, preferring vodka martinis to gin martinis as well.

csn, i suppose that makes sense. a class for me is 45 minutes significantly less than 2 hours.
wnen classes are longer for whatever reason water may or may not come into the picture.

Since we Are on the topic, and I didn't want to make a new thread entirely.

" Have any of you guys trained in water?, does it help"

I haven't done so yet, due to lack of pool. ;)

But it is a method recommended in our style.

Yes, have done it. Gives good resistance to your movements. Also good for training your moves while holding your breath ;)

Whenever I'm in the surf I practise holding a horse stance against the waves and I practice rooting on the shifting sand (not that kind of rooting!)...

(although that is good on the sand... speshly at night with a cool breeze gently whistling across your buttocks, but I digress)...

Where was I?

Oh yeah - try to hold your stance against the waves and turn your body to offer least resistance to the movement of the water, etc.

I've had some funny looks, but it's very good training.

never tried underwater traing..holding breath and stuff..interesting.:)
if Im at the beach I usually try to stand where im about neck or chest high and kick as much as possible.
also tried holding stances and punching at various levels.

I will have to try it - resisting the waves that is :D

Try the shagging on the beach thing too - that's way cool.

naw, we'd be alchololics if we drank before or during class.

training in water is fun, had a bad experience w/ trying to root in the sand though...I sunk to about mid thigh which put me about chin deep in the water...more a testatment to the liquidity of the sand than my fantastic rooting ability...still a bit sketchy till someone helped me out...laughing of course.

I drink water constantly, and whenever I get thirsty during class (3 hours).

As for training in water, when I was a kid I used to practice in my pool all the time. Now, I use Hsing-I stepping in the surf, use it to hold my position or bust through waves in the shorebreak. It's not something I've been taught, just fun to do and to test my connections.

heard for the first time a while a go and I always maintained that you shouldn't drink cold water.

anyone else believe this?

Well actually thats the thing. If you are drinking cold water, your body feals that, and thinks it needs to warm it up, producing more heat, so it doesn't do diddly as far as cooling you down. I drink cool water (not ice cold) before and during class. We typically go 90 minutes with our class, and if I'm leading we have a water break whenever I'm thirsty :D .

As far as training in water, I used to do tan tui in the water, it was good training, got some weird looks though :D ..

I used to use ankle weights and practice shin kicks and knees in my pool.

I don't do it anymore cuz the new landscape on a slope behind my house has caused my pool to become algae infested.

"I practice rooting"

You crazy australians... As for "rooting" in the sand... Careful not to make an organ grinder of yourself. Sand does not make for more "sensation", at least not pleasantly.

Re: cold water - Colder water contracts lungs, contracts veins. Warmer water dialates veins, and lungs, thus increasing blood flow, and oxygen in the blood.

Training in the pool - Havent done it lately, but Ive heard that swimming can make you lose speed on land?
Although its great cardio...
