Is that a battery-operated one? :D

With inter-changeable heads?

A 'retractable baton' that is battery operated and has interchangeable heads. Sure it isn't 16" wide? :D

Are they illegal?

As I understand it... heck, come to think of it, I'm not sure. When you're talking about swords/knives, the standard, I think, is to give "Blade length" or some such.

Having thought about it, I'd say the chances were that the handle is included. ASP include a 31" version. That's 78 cm. If you add the length of a handle on to that (about another 8" or 20 cm) you're talking something pretty excessive.

Taking into account also the manner of their construction - the handle is really just a grip around the base section rather than a handle as such.

I'm fairly sure the standard length for Aussie cops is the 21", maybe the 26".

Are they illegal?

Illegal for unlicenced civilians to carry in West Aus, definitely. Possibly (probably) the same in all states of Aus. It's not illegal, as I understand it, to own one though. Kinda like a sword in that respect.

As for elsewhere in the world... ah, you lot can do your own research. :D

Be pretty wonky if you couldn't, given that you can go strapped in Virginia.

- as long as it's not concealed?

Our forum sponsors carry two versions: a spring loaded one (http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/19-01.html) and a gravity drawn one (http://store.yahoo.com/martialartsmart/19-02.html). You'll find measurements there while closed and opened, as well as what states we cannot sell to. Check your local laws too - some counties will make certain weapons illegal beyond state requirements.

if you are going to get one, dont waste your money on the knockoff's or the spring loaded ones (which break easily), spend the jack and get an ASP

as long as it's not concealed? That's right fa-jing, but the cops may still stop and have a question and answer session with you to see if you have any priors and why are you walking around with a weapon in your hand. Also the second your gun, stick or knife becomes covered by anything you are then breaking the law. The weird thing is you can get a CC permit for the gun but not for the knives or baton.

One of my friends ,a policeman, teaches the retractable baton techs and regulations (among other things) in a "Technical control academy" for policemen and security personnel . He told me that they are perfectly legal (In my country anyway) if the person has been given the proper formation in it's use.
Just a very light blow of that thing on a leg or hand can incapacitate somebody so ,it should be used with caution.
